A24 Bringing Hereditary, It Comes at Night, and More Horror Movies Back to Theaters for Halloween

As a long-time aficionado of the macabre and the uncanny, I can’t help but feel a shiver of excitement run down my spine at the prospect of these A24 masterpieces gracing the big screen once more. The memories of watching them for the first time, huddled in the dark, heart pounding, are etched indelibly into my psyche.

A24 Films has built a reputation for delivering unique and captivating horror films over the past decade, with several titles gaining even more popularity on streaming platforms. Now, A24 is bringing back popular horror flicks such as “Hereditary” and “It Comes at Night” to the silver screen. This is an exciting opportunity for many viewers to see these movies in a theater setting for the first time. To sweeten the deal, A24 has partnered with Regal Cinemas to offer tickets for just $8 per screening. You can find the complete schedule of A24 films returning to theaters starting from October 1st on the link provided below.

The following A24 films will be screening at participating theaters:

  • Tuesday, October 1st – The Killing of a Sacred Deer
  • Tuesday, October 8th – A Ghost Story
  • Tuesday, October 15th – It Comes at Night
  • Tuesday, October 22nd – Dream Scenario
  • Tuesday, October 29th – Hereditary

The series begins with “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” a movie released in 2017 by director Yorgos Lanthimos. This filmmaker is known for his unique perspectives, as seen in his 2015 film, “The Lobster,” which delved into the complexities of love and lifelong commitment. However, “Sacred Deer” takes audiences to a much more unsettling and unpredictable world than anyone might have expected from Lanthimos’ previous work. Recently, he has garnered praise for “Poor Things,” another genre-bending story that delves into the human condition. Nevertheless, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” may be Lanthimos’ most disquieting project to date.

24 provides a summary for the movie titled “Dr. Steven Murphy”: Dr. Steven Murphy, played by Colin Farrell, is a highly respected cardiovascular surgeon and father of two well-behaved children, 12-year-old Bob and 14-year-old Kim, along with his wife Anna, an ophthalmologist. However, the tranquility of their suburban life is disrupted by Martin, a teenager without a father, whom Steven has secretly been mentoring. As Martin gradually infiltrates the family’s peaceful environment with increasingly troubling behaviors, it becomes evident that he harbors malicious intentions towards the Murphy family. This is revealed when he confronts Steven about an old mistake that could jeopardize the family’s happiness and harmony.

A Ghost Story hails from director David Lowery, who recently enchanted viewers with the fantasy film The Green Knight. Unlike other films in this series returning to theaters, Lowery’s movie leans less towards horror but presents a darker, more contemplative feel compared to typical dramas that tackle similar themes. It delves into macabre and thought-provoking subject matter in an unconventional manner.

In simpler terms, the film “A Ghost Story” by A24 is about a ghost (played by Casey Affleck who won an Academy Award) who returns to his suburban home after death to comfort his grieving wife (Rooney Mara, nominated for an Academy Award). However, as a spirit, he finds himself unable to intervene as time moves on and his past life fades away. The ghost then embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, grappling with profound questions about life and the universe. This film offers a unique, thought-provoking exploration of love and loss, leaving viewers pondering long after they’ve left the theater.

In 2017, the film “It Comes at Night” was often overlooked by mainstream horror enthusiasts, possibly because there were many apocalyptic tales being produced across different platforms. Unlike its peers, this movie didn’t delve into the specific menace tormenting our protagonists or investigate the origins of that menace. Instead, it concentrated on enigmatic and unseen threats, as well as the pervasive paranoia these threats instilled in survivors.

17-year-old Travis lives in a secluded house under the watchful eyes of his cautious and armed parents, Joel Edgerton and Carmen Ejogo. In this setting, he struggles with fear, loss, and suspicion as a couple, Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough, along with their child, seek shelter in his family home during a crisis. Despite the goodwill of both families, tension and distrust escalate as the dangers outside approach. However, nothing compares to the inner demons, where Travis uncovers that his father’s dedication to safeguarding the family might have dire consequences for his soul.

Back in 2018, watching Ari Aster’s Hereditary was like stepping into a chilling nightmare. At the Sundance Film Festival, folks were buzzing that it would be the scariest movie of the year, and let me tell you, they weren’t wrong. As a horror enthusiast, I found myself completely captivated by this film, not just because it was terrifying, but also because it was one of the best horror movies of the 2010s.

“The film ‘Hereditary’ portrays a family’s descent into chaos as they uncover eerie and progressively terrifying mysteries about their ancestry after the matriarch passes away. As they dig deeper, they realize they might be running from a sinister destiny they seem to have inherited. Newcomer writer-director Ari Aster delivers an unsettling depiction of a family crisis that showcases his talent as a budding master, turning a personal tragedy into something unsettling and profoundly uneasy. The movie innovatively explores the horror genre by offering a haunting portrayal of heritage spiraling out of control.

In a different twist on storytelling, the movie titled “Dream Scenario ” ventures deeper into the realms of absurdity and surrealism rather than strictly focusing on a narrative that emotionally resonates. Starring Nicolas Cage, this film is portrayed as follows: “An ordinary family man named Paul Matthews (Cage) experiences his life being flipped around when countless strangers begin to see him in their dreams. However, as these dream encounters take a darker turn, the hapless Paul must grapple with his newfound fame and navigate through this wildly amusing comedy. The movie is directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and produced by Ari Aster.

A24’s Eerie Series kicks off on October 1st.

I’m eagerly awaiting these flicks at the cinema! If you’re also a Star Wars and horror enthusiast, let’s chat with Patrick Cavanaugh. Connect with him via Twitter or Instagram!
