Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas, stars of “The Holdovers”, have been formally chosen for the roles in A24’s forthcoming film based on Anthony Bourdain, now known as “Tony”.
According to reports, Sessa will step into the shoes of the renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain for the upcoming A24 biopic titled Tony, directed by Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson. In addition to Sessa, Banderas is also part of the cast. Following his success in Babygirl and Paddington in Peru, Banderas’ role in Tony remains undisclosed. As per the official synopsis, Tony will be set in 1976 when a young Bourdain undergoes a transformative experience while working and living in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Todd Bartels and Lou Howe are credited with writing the screenplay for the film, which is scheduled to start production in May; however, there has been no announcement regarding its release date.
Known globally as both a celebrated chef and popular TV host, Anthony Bourdain gained significant recognition following the success of his best-selling memoir, “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.” After publishing this book, he emerged as an influential figure within the food industry. He then showcased various food cultures in programs like “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.” Regrettably, Bourdain passed away on June 8, 2018.
In his first major film role, Sessa has been recognized with a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Performer in Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers”. He is also expected to appear in the third installment of the “Now You See Me” series, titled “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t”, due in theaters on November 14. Additionally, Sessa will be featured alongside Rose Byrne and Octavia Spencer in the upcoming drama “Tow”, which is scheduled to make its debut at this year’s film festival.
Matt Johnson is in Talks to Direct Magic: The Gathering Movie
In his preparations for directing the Anthony Bourdain biography, it’s worth noting that Johnson has also been discussing a potential role in a brand-new “Magic: The Gathering” film with Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment. If successful, Johnson would spearhead the launch of a new cinematic universe, as both studios aim to develop a connected television series in the future too.
Johnston is chiefly recognized for his independent acting and directing roles, particularly in films like “BlackBerry” and “Operation Avalanche”. His newest production, titled “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie“, was recently showcased at the South by Southwest film festival and acquired by distributor Neon. This movie is derived from his sitcom series, “ Nirvanna the Band the Show“, and is anticipated to hit national screens in 2025.
There is no official release date for Tony.
