As a seasoned movie buff who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of television, I can confidently say that the upcoming crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is an absolute game-changer. The idea of these two shows, with their distinct tones and unique humor, coming together is akin to peanut butter and jelly, or maybe more accurately, macaroni and cheese – a perfect pairing that just works.
It appears that Charlie Day might step into a fresh role for pictures of an upcoming cross-over between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Despite airing on different networks (ABC for “Abbott Elementary” and FXX for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), the shows are planning to merge their casts. Each show will air an episode as part of a two-episode crossover, set to debut in the upcoming year. For those eager to catch a glimpse of these interactions, this is just the place! As for hints, it’s possible that Charlie from “Always Sunny” could be a new employee at Abbott Elementary.
ABC shared pictures for the ninth episode of “Abbott Elementary” Season 4 titled “Volunteers,” which is the first part of a crossover with “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” The photos show the cast from the latter series roaming around Abbott Elementary. Charlie Day, a key character from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” features prominently, hinting at a substantial role for him as the co-owner of Paddy’s Pub. However, it remains uncertain whether he might work at Abbott Elementary. A more plausible explanation is that Charlie is one of the numerous volunteers lending aid to the Philadelphia school. The rest of the cast – Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, and Danny DeVito – can be spotted wearing identical visitor badges in these photos.

Earlier in the year, the team responsible for hit shows like “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” discussed an upcoming crossover. Quinta Brunson, one of the stars and creators, shared some intriguing details with Variety. She remained tight-lipped about who, what, where, or when, but she described it as something very exciting that could potentially revolutionize television.
Kaitlin Olson found the “Abbott Elementary” crossover episode extremely enjoyable to film, and she’s thrilled that they’ll be joining their world in just a few weeks. She added that it’s been an enjoyable experience for both casts, as they come from different show genres – a cable show for them and a network show for us.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but get excited when I heard that the creative minds behind Abbott Elementary, Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, spilled the beans about Charlie’s character having a substantial storyline in an upcoming episode. Intriguingly enough, they initially considered a crossover as a bit of a chuckle, seeing how the shows are quite a unique blend of tones. But who knows? Maybe they’ll surprise us with some unexpected synergy!
However, Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day dropped by our writers’ room, where we brainstormed some general concepts. After this, we exchanged emails detailing scene-by-scene breakdowns (beat sheets) and then an overall outline. They were incredibly cooperative throughout the process. Any apprehensions about the tones of the shows potentially clashing vanished as soon as filming with Charlie began.
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 8:30 PM Eastern Time, the initial segment of the cross-over between Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be broadcast on ABC.
