Over the years, Gotham has descended into darkness, but Roman Sionis, infamously known as Black Mask, has found a way to make it even worse than ever before – an unprecedented level of chaos. Unlike any trouble Batman has faced previously, Sionis has outsmarted him and orchestrated a scheme that has transformed Gotham City into a city where lawlessness reigns supreme, reminiscent of the horror depicted in The Purge. This grim reality has turned the already perilous city into a time bomb waiting to explode.
In the previous issue, Sionis set his strategy in motion by having his team distribute crates of masks across the city, not for a Party Animals recruitment drive as it might seem. Instead, these masks were integrated with Roman’s extensive network, allowing them to receive real-time information about targets spread throughout the urban landscape.
When an individual dons a mask, they gain instant access to real-time data about anyone they gaze upon. This information includes their identity (if registered) and the potential monetary reward for taking their life. The revelation of this unsettling truth becomes evident as characters like Martha Wayne and James Gordon find themselves ensnared in the chaos, with those around them slipping on masks and readying themselves for action.
As Martha dons her mask, it’s evident that chaos erupts nearby, and this is due to the fact that Sionis doesn’t merely pay for murders; he essentially legalizes crime by offering substantial bounties, much like in The Purge where all wrongdoings are sanctioned for a 12-hour period.
As an enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the reward system here: Robbery nets you $50k, Arson, $100k, Assault, $150k, while Murder takes the cake at $250k. The grand total of all your criminal activities is displayed at the screen’s bottom. That sum could potentially be increased by bounties placed on specific individuals. For Mayor James Gordon, that bounty stands at a staggering 1 Million dollars.
As we navigate different areas within the city, areas once familiar transform into horrifying production lines. This is reminiscent of The Purge; although everyone knows when it starts, as the night deepens, so does the terror and danger. The streets are filled with masked individuals armed to the teeth, and those not protected find themselves in a brutal struggle for existence.
In essence, Absolute Batman surpasses The Purge in terms of moral decay because it involves money transactions. Although there are individuals profiting from The Purge in the movies, it’s not a universal rule, and many participate out of pure violence without financial gain. However, Sionis in this scenario offers monetary rewards for criminal acts, which could potentially sway those on the fence towards crime, enticed by an unusually large payday.
