Absolute Green Lantern Gives an Iconic Lantern a Dragon Ball Z Makeover, and It Rules

The radical transformation of Green Lantern, particularly for Hal Jordan, Jo Mullein, and others, significantly altered the narrative landscape. However, the most substantial modifications were centered around the Green Lantern mythology and representation. Although the fundamental symbol remains unchanged, the initial manifestation deviated greatly from fan expectations, a phenomenon that applied to Abin Sur’s debut as well. The new design has eliminated the human-like appearance and pink complexion, replacing them with an Abin Sur who bears a striking resemblance to characters from Dragon Ball Z, thereby modernizing and enhancing the familiar visage substantially.

In one issue, Abin Sur appears just once, yet leaves a substantial impression. A giant Green Lantern emblem descends in the heart of a city, with an unidentified figure floating above it in the sky. This mystery character is, in fact, Abin Sur. The transformation is striking, as night and day contrast. Compare the revised version and the standard universe version in the images provided.

Initially, Sur was just like any other human in the Corps, with the exception of his pink complexion. However, things have changed drastically now. His skin has turned a paler shade of grey, and he’s significantly larger and incredibly muscular. Additionally, his body structure appears to have undergone some alterations, making him look distinctively alien. This change includes an elongated head section and the addition of four arms.

In this transformed state, Abin Sur radiates a chilling menace and raw power that perfectly aligns with the extraterrestrial conflict vibe of the Green Lantern Corps. I can hardly wait to witness his abilities, and drawing from our Dragon Ball Z analogy, I’m convinced he’ll bring absolute chaos when we finally watch him go toe-to-toe with an opponent. To picture it, imagine Abin Sur squaring off against Goku or Broly – quite the spectacle, though that might just be me dreaming.

Regarding the overall mystery of Absolute Green Lantern, several aspects remain unexplored, such as the connection between Hal’s lethal powers and his role within the Green Lantern Corps, and when exactly Jo became a Green Lantern. The latest issue concludes with Jo joining the ranks, but her transformation seems to have occurred off-screen, as she was last seen investigating the new emblem alongside Hal and John Stewart in the previous installment.

Apart from Hal and Jo, does John possess abilities too, and if yes, what are they? Is Abin Sur an invader or protector of Earth, and how exactly is a Lantern selected initially? We’ll find out more details eventually, but hopefully, we’ll uncover some clues in the upcoming second issue due later this month.
