In a bold move, the DC Universe’s Absolute Universe isn’t shy about making significant changes, but even among these transformations, Absolute Green Lantern #1 might have just executed one of the most dramatic shifts yet for a beloved character – Hal Jordan, the renowned Green Lantern. This issue significantly alters the established status quo of the mainline universe, particularly concerning Jordan. Although he possesses immense power, this isn’t the kind of power he desired, and it’s not the power fans may have anticipated. Proceed with caution if you haven’t read Absolute Green Lantern #1 yet, as major spoilers are approaching!
From the start, Jordan had been impacted by something unusual. While strolling along the roadside, a police officer stopped him in the sweltering heat to ask about his destination. Jordan appeared anxious and on edge even before this encounter. However, when the officer noticed that Jordan’s left hand remained hidden inside his jacket pocket, the situation took a turn for the worse. It wasn’t until later that Jordan reluctantly showed his hand, revealing it was black and pulsating with an unknown energy. This sudden release of power instantly claimed the officer’s life, leaving only his badge behind on the ground.
Later on, we discover through a sequence of events that Jordan, Jo Mullein, and John Stewart had all seen the startling emergence of an unidentified artifact in the heart of the town. Following a motorcyclist’s accidental collision with this enigmatic object, leading to his immediate demise, they decided to leave the diner to examine it further.
The large Green Lantern emblem-like object is scrutinized by Stewart, Mullein, and Jordan. However, it’s Jordan who makes contact with the walls of this mysterious artifact first. Shortly after touching it, he begins to hear a voice inside his mind and sees images of a dark symbol. This seems to be the same entity that has invaded his hand and part of his arm, exhibiting a destructive force. Unfortunately, as time passes, the situation only deteriorates further for him.
Subsequently, we shift focus to the current moment as Jordan enters a diner following his roadside encounter with the officer. After a broadcast discloses the events unfolding in the adjacent town, Jordan admits his presence there and takes responsibility for the incident. As he continues to speak, the patrons and staff grow increasingly uncomfortable, and someone spots him keeping his hand inside his jacket once more, triggering another altercation.
In a disclosure, it’s made clear that Jordan exerts all his strength to suppress his power, and it responds to threats. However, when one of the patrons tries to free himself from Jordan’s grasp, Jordan loses control yet again, leading to the man’s death and Jordan seemingly absorbing him. One of the employees then fires at Jordan, but he feels a sense of relief, as the energy driving him expels the bullet and fully heals him, ensuring his continued presence.
As a movie buff, I found myself gripped by the scene where Jordan unleashed chaos in the diner, losing self-control yet again. Now, he’s transformed into an unbridled incarnation of Black Hand, making him a lethal threat that only grows more dangerous as he moves through town. The last page of this issue hints at a clash between Jo and Hal, and it seems Jo has acquired new abilities, emanating green energy and already bearing the insignia of a Green Lantern. With Hal seemingly destined for a standoff, I can’t help but feel that my anticipation for next month’s issue has hit an all-time high – even if Hal vs. the World wasn’t on my list of predictions!
