Absolute Superman: Kal-El’s Suit and New Solar Powers Make the Man of Steel Stronger Than Ever

As a long-time fan of Superman, I must say that Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval have truly outdone themselves with “Absolute Superman“. This fresh take on the Man of Steel is a breathtaking journey into an alternate universe where our hero is not only powered by solar energy but literally embodies it.

In a universe where resilience must outshine all else to endure, the Last Son from Krypton radiates with the intensity of solar power. The comic book “Supreme Man,” penned by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval, presents Kal-El from the Absolute Cosmos: a realm crafted from Darkseid’s energy. Much like his counterpart in the DC Multiverse – born beneath Krypton’s dying red sun and gaining his abilities by harnessing Earth’s yellow solar rays – Supreme Man possesses superhuman strength, speed, and fiery heat vision.

Instead of deriving power through solar energy like DCU’s Superman, Absolute Superman functions as a living solar battery, absorbing and storing sunlight directly. This extraordinary being uses the absorbed solar radiation to produce heat from his fists, yet he requires periodic recharging in a portable solar facility.

Aaron commented to ComicBook that Rafa’s suit design was exceptional and the cover of the first issue perfectly captures the essence of the comic. The image depicts Superman standing in sunlight on a Kansas field, yet still hidden in shadows. This, according to Aaron, reflects the central theme of their book: Superman is living in the shadows but draws his power from the Sun, making him a son of the Sun.

In his travels across the world, Superman, devoid of a personal sanctuary like Fortress of Solitude, has been engaged in a prolonged struggle against Lazarus Corp and their battalion of heavily-armed troops called Peacemakers. These soldiers’ weapons and armor seem to be engineered by this universe’s version of Brainiac. However, Superman possesses his own alien technology: Sol, a suit made from living armor fueled by the Kryptonian artificial intelligence that manages and maintains his solar energy reserves.

Aaron hinted, “As we delve deeper, you’ll discover many secrets about [Superman’s suit]. It transforms in various ways – sometimes it has a cape, other times it doesn’t. The changes are significant.

Aaron pointed out, ‘Superman actually carries remnants of his home planet on his person.’ He added, ‘It’s quite stylish and offers unique possibilities compared to the conventional flowing cape.’

Just like Superman’s S-symbol represents the emblem of Krypton’s working class instead of the House of El, the power-infused gauntlets on his suit are also a reminder of the destruction of his home planet, Krypton.

Absolute Superman #1 is on sale now from DC Comics.
