The extraordinary reinterpretation of Superman’s lore by Absolute Superman has left a lasting impression on the Superman saga, particularly in its innovative portrayal of Krypton. Similarly, this series is now breathing new life into Kal-El’s Smallville years. The anguish of Kal-El’s loss isn’t merely expressed but deeply felt throughout each page, and yet, that might not even be the most heart-wrenching moment in this issue. Absolute Superman is masterfully redefining one of DC Comics’ most iconic mythologies, and the future looks exceptionally promising.
In the fifth issue of the ‘Absolute Superman’ series, the first story arc concluded with the annihilation of Krypton, but this pales in significance when compared to the heartrending loss of Kal-El’s parents and his entire support system. This profound impact is a testament to the meticulous character development Jason Aaron has given not only to Krypton itself, but also its influence on Kal-El’s family background and upbringing. These themes continue to resonate in ‘Absolute Superman’ #6.
As a fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the exceptional work of artists Carmine Di Giandomenico and Ulises Arreola. They skillfully depict the deeply emotional journey of Kal, as he grapples with his past experiences, and subsequently undergoes an equally dramatic transformation due to the surprising new environment that befalls him. Their vivid artwork truly brings the story to life!
In these scenes, you’ll find familiar Smallville elements, yet they’ve been subtly transformed, much like Krypton and its DNA. For instance, the bond between Martha and Jonathan has a new dimension compared to the original, and their interactions with Kal-El, coupled with the Lazarus menace, significantly alter their relationship dynamics. The circumstances under which Kal encounters them also play a crucial role in this transformation.
In this single storyline, we get a profound insight into Martha and Jonathan’s personalities as well as their parental roles. The interactions between Kal and the Kents, particularly at the end of the issue, are exceptionally moving, despite neither party fully grasping each other. This underscores the strength of family, love, and acceptance. Yet, it makes the story even more poignant when events take a turn for the worse.
As chaos unfolds, the action is nothing short of breathtaking, and this early iteration of Superman truly embodies strength. Yet, beneath that facade lies an undeniably human heart, reminding us once again of the essence of who Superman has always been. This portrayal might even be more poignant in certain aspects, and as the story concludes with some powerfully emotional scenes, a hint of mystery is subtly introduced, leaving me eager for more thrilling moments to unfold.
