Absolute Superman’s Jason Aaron Teases Heartbreaking Fate of Krypton, Impact on Kal-El, and More

In the first four issues of Absolute Superman, DC has been gradually leading up to a pivotal moment in the storyline. Now, in issue #5, we’ll finally uncover the truth about Krypton and its effect on young Kal-El, both in his past and present life. ComicBook talked with Jason Aaron, the writer of Absolute Superman, about this highly anticipated issue, discussing the implications for Kal-El and the series as a whole, and the challenges Aaron faced when setting Krypton’s ultimate destruction into motion.

In Absolute Superman, a significant shift occurs in the storyline of Superman: The bond between Kal-El and Krypton contrasts significantly with his relationship to Earth. Unlike previous versions, Kal-El spends his formative years on Krypton alongside Jor-El and Lara-El before moving to Earth with the Kents. This mysterious transition on Earth intrigues Aaron about the project, as it alters how Krypton’s destruction affects Kal-El throughout both his past and present experiences.

As a die-hard Superman fan, let me tell you – one aspect I’ve been eagerly anticipating is the exploration of Kal-El’s Kryptonian heritage. This isn’t just some secondary detail; it’s crucial because it shapes who he is at his core. You see, before that fateful day when Krypton exploded and he found himself on Earth, Kal-El was already a fully realized individual, and I’ve always been intrigued by how this part of his past would be depicted in this version. So, when you mention that aspect, it resonates with me deeply.

Aaron mentioned changing some typical aspects linked with the Kents and Smallville to focus more on Krypton, making Kal-El more of a Kryptonian immigrant upon arrival here, and emphasizing him as the last surviving Kryptonian who can recall his family, friends, culture, planet, and all that pertains to it.

Given the life Kal-El lived on Krypton and his connection with his parents, Aaron believes he might have stretched out the time on Krypton to a complete 12-issue series. Essentially, when looking at the book now, it seems to him that perhaps he could have dedicated an entire 12 issues solely to Krypton, much like Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man approach with young Kal-El on Krypton for an entire year.

Aaron found it challenging to write issue 5 because he loved the previous content so much, and destroying it all was hard for him. However, he believes this struggle is beneficial. He feels it’s good that he experienced such strong emotions while writing it, and he hopes readers will feel the same sense of loss as Superman (Kal-El) does when experiencing something similar.

While Krypton may be disappearing from our story, it won’t entirely vanish from Superman’s narrative, as it remains significant in his journey.

Aaron mentioned that Superman, or Kal-El, will likely never move past his past. His identity is deeply rooted in his life on Krypton, making it a significant part of who he is. Since he’s the only one who remembers Krypton’s existence and has vivid memories of it, this influence continues to shape him, especially as he navigates challenging situations in the present day on Earth. He seems lost without connections or people around him.

Aaron stated that he’s solitary, with only his recollections of his parents from Krypton and the lessons they imparted as his companions. These memories, he believes, will serve as a beacon for him in the future. Therefore, as long as Aaron continues writing the book – which he intends to do for a considerable period – he plans on delving frequently into Kal-El’s recollections of Krypton.

In the glimpse provided, the upcoming issue titled “Absolute Superman” will offer fans an enlarged perspective on Krypton’s tumultuous last moments. Remarkably, the trio consisting of Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola, and Becca Carey have breathed life into these emotionally charged events in a unique manner that hasn’t been depicted before.

Aaron commented on how the world seems to be in turmoil, with riots occurring everywhere, even the peaceful countryside being attacked, cities collapsing, and ships crashing. He believes that this devastation is more intensely felt in this current storyline than usual. Furthermore, he praised Rafa for his exceptional work on designing Krypton’s appearance and atmosphere. Lastly, he hinted at the emotional struggles Kal-El faces with Lois and Jimmy, who has joined the Omega Men. He didn’t reveal much about where the plot will lead after that.

Absolute Superman hits comic stores on March 12th.
