Absolute Wonder Woman’s Epic First Arc Finale Wears Its Heart on its Sleeve

In Absolute Wonder Woman #5, the challenge is set high as it follows up on one of its most memorable scenes, and surprisingly, it manages to exceed expectations. The Last Amazon (part 5) not only concludes flawlessly but also ties up loose ends from the series, reinforcing significant relationships. If you found Wonder Woman splitting the Tetracide with a giant sword impressive, trust me, there’s more to come that will leave you speechless.

In a surprising twist, last issue seemed almost like an ending, but delving into issue #5 reveals that it was merely a tantalizing prelude to the main storyline. Kelly Thompson is skillfully adding another crucial piece to the puzzle, with much of this issue focusing on Circe’s gift to Diana – the Lasso of Transmogrification. The lasso’s abilities are indeed remarkable, but it serves merely as one tool among many. The significance behind it surpasses its capabilities, making it a vital key to understanding the story’s underlying message.

Thompson delves deeper into the unique bond between mother and daughter, revealing previously unseen aspects of their relationship in this issue. Diana’s not entirely at ease with the lasso, as its harshness conflicts with her ideals, yet it provides a fresh perspective on Circe’s affection for her child and the sacrifices she is willing to make for her protection. A symbol synonymous with the character, the lasso, gains deeper significance once more in Absolute Wonder Woman, as it effectively adds layers of meaning that resonate with both fans and Diana herself.

Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey artfully depict the struggle among a mother, her daughter, and a divine entity, with Hecate taking on a more significant part in their relationship than first perceived. The change in color scheme and mood when Circe is highlighted versus Hecate creates a vivid image, and the sequence of panels imparts an almost ethereal feeling as difficult realities are revealed.

After that, it’s the spectacular culmination we’ve been waiting for, and it truly delivers on its promise. It’s not often you get to witness Wonder Woman transforming into a legendary mythological figure, like Medusa, and if this scenario seems extraordinary, it certainly is. Sherman and Bellaire surpass the previous cliffhanger, designing an epic final battle that resonates with grandeur yet crucially connects to the meaningful relationships Diana has established throughout her journey. These moments are satisfying and above all deserved, a reflection of the dedicated work the team has put into developing the series’ supporting characters.

Without a doubt, Wonder Woman remains the radiant gem in DC’s collection of Absolutes. It’s hard to imagine surpassing her brilliance, yet if there’s someone who could pull off such a feat, it’s undeniably Wonder Woman.
