It’s with deep sadness that we share the news: Voice actor, narrator, and commentator extraordinaire, Wayne June – famously known as The Ancestor in the Darkest Dungeon series – has passed away. This tragic loss was confirmed by Red Hook Studios co-founder and creative director Chris Bourassa, who wrote: “Over the past decade, it’s been an extraordinary privilege to write for him. Despite never having the chance to shake his hand, I considered him a friend.
If you haven’t experienced the challenging, dark RPG series before, it’s hard to emphasize enough how significantly June’s atmospheric work enhances Red Hook’s already top-notch gameplay throughout a 40+ hour campaign. This component is absolutely crucial. For your reference, we’ve included the original cinematic and our introduction to the well-known character above.
However, the countless witty, incidental comments and extended narrative segments that celebrate your success following a great critical hit, found consistently throughout various games and expansions, significantly elevate June’s acting above others.
Do you recognize the ominous, Lovecraftian-style tales spun by The Ancestor, the unnerving narrator of the Darkest Dungeons game? Could you fathom any other voice bringing this series to life? Let the shadows flee back to their abyss in the comments section.
