Adam Copeland Reveals AEW Double or Nothing Surprise Was Originally Planned for WrestleMania

As a long-time wrestling enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many iconic stables, I must say that seeing Adam Copeland, aka Edge, bring back The Brood at AEW Double or Nothing was a truly nostalgic moment. The return of Gangrel after two years was the cherry on top of an already exciting match against Malakai Black and House of Black.

At AEW Double or Nothing, Adam Copeland squared off against Malakai Black of the House of Black inside a Steel Cage. Given the eerie tone of their rivalry, Copeland drew upon his past with the vampire stable The Brood to employ some strategic moves leading up to the bout. He resurrected the well-known Brood Bath and even used the Slayer theme song for his grand entrance. In the main event, fans were taken aback as Gangrel made a comeback in AEW after a two-year absence, aiding Copeland in retaining the TNT Championship.

Previously, Copeland shared with Chris Van Vliet that there had been plans to bring the group back together in WWE, but these plans were consistently halted because some within the company believed the audience wouldn’t recall them. Later, ComicBook interviewed Copeland about this moment and his reunion with his Brood stablemate. In the interview, he disclosed that their original plan for a surprise was actually intended for WrestleMania 39.

The Brood’s AEW Double or Nothing Surprise

It was fantastic. As we had discussed for WrestleMania, the scenario unfolded like what we had envisioned with The Demon [Finn Balor], but it kept getting disallowed. Alright, understood. It’s not my playground; I just enjoy playing in it. I knew with AEW it could become a reality because AEW values those who have been loyal fans for years. That’s one of the main aspects I’ve noticed about AEW – it appreciates its long-term fans. It seemed fitting that House of Black would be the ideal group to collaborate with in this context. Frankly, there was no other suitable option, right? The Demon fit well. Similarly, House of Black made perfect sense. Meanwhile, I hoped to also remind people who might have forgotten, ‘hey, House of Black is impressive and has a unique style.’

As a dedicated fan, it feels like this trio, The Brood, is a captivating ensemble. With so much rich history to draw from among my past roles and personas, the question lingers: will they summon me again? Will I choose to join them? Could Malakai [Black] potentially face betrayal? And as an unexpected twist, Gangrel’s return adds a satisfying conclusion to his story arc.

That fellow is truly exceptional; one of the kindest individuals I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Across this industry, everyone will echo the same sentiment. Not only that, but he’s quite formidable – it’s surprising how many overlook his strength. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 250 pounds, engaging him in a wrestling match is like grappling with a Pit Bull [laughs]. He’s incredibly powerful. So I had no doubt he was still capable of achieving what he did. It felt incredibly fulfilling, after 25 years, to reconnect in front of an audience, relive the past, and see the crowd respond positively. Knowing that they appreciated it as well, that they wanted it too – it felt great for him to finally receive recognition, as they say, ‘to get his flowers.’
