I jumped right into high gear as soon as Netflix announced an animated adaptation of “Devil May Cry,” with creator Adi Shankar at the helm. Hot on the heels of the first season’s finale, Netflix promptly confirmed that a second season was in the works. Though they haven’t disclosed a release date for this video game adaptation’s return, Shankar has been dropping hints about what lies ahead. Given Dante’s predicament at the end of the first season finale, it seems logical that things will take on a new shape for Capcom’s most prominent demon hunter.
During an interview with Esquire, Shankar expressed his intentions for the upcoming second season and the increased significance of Dante’s brother Vergil, “From the start, I envisioned growing and broadening the world of Devil May Cry. The first season served as a means to introduce it, but the narrative for the second season is going to shift. Compared to the first season, the second will be distinctively different in terms of style and tone. Vergil is a major, crucial character. In essence, we’re looking at a new show. I aspire to outdo Arcane, surpass it in popularity… Arcane is like the Joker setting money on fire, and it’s fantastic. With season 2 of Devil May Cry, my aim is to outmatch that. To show up to a battlefield with a water balloon and demolish it. Because that’s impressive.

Devil May Cry Vs Anime
In the same conversation, Shankar expressed that his work isn’t what you might call “anime,” instead, he sees it as a continuation of shows like X-Men, Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, and UltraForce. I was captivated by the action-packed weekend cartoons from America, even though I wasn’t living there. They were incredible, and they ignited a desire within me to be part of this vibrant culture. However, these shows were confined by broadcasting standards, leaving me wondering what could have been if they had more freedom. That’s the realm I’m creating – a space that preserves the essence of those classic shows but pushes their boundaries for an audience who still yearns for that style and energy, but has grown up. I’m not trying to replicate anime’s grammar; rather, I aim to elevate the language of that era for a mature audience.
How Did Devil May Cry Season One End?
Although Dante managed to save Earth, his story didn’t have a happy ending when the first animated series concluded. DarkCom had captured Dante, the son of Sparda, who was then put into suspended animation as the United States launched an invasion into the demon-filled universe. Fortunately, Dante’s brother Vergil took action in the final scenes of the season finale, ready to confront the invading forces and rescue the defenseless demons inhabiting that world.
