Adult Swim, often recognized for creating timeless comedy shows such as “Rick and Morty,” “Smiling Friends,” and “The Venture Bros” among others, isn’t shy about breaking away from the norm. For instance, Genndy Tartakovsky challenged convention with “Primal.” This series delves into a ruthless prehistoric era, where Spear and Fang struggle to survive. As their story concluded in the second season, the third season is set to adopt an anthology format. In fact, Tartakovsky himself has shared insights about when we can anticipate the return of “Primal” on our television screens.
The third season of “Primal” has been officially announced to air in early 2026, allowing Fang and Spear some time to delve into fresh, intense narratives and universes. In a recent chat with MSN, creator Tartakovsky shared insights about the upcoming season and expressed his immense satisfaction with this prehistoric show, “It’s a significant leap. We took what we accomplished in season one and elevated it slightly in season two, and season three surpasses both. I can’t reveal too much without spoiling it all, but let me just say that it’s bigger, more shocking, and relentless. At times, you’ll feel like, ‘I can’t believe I’m watching this.’ In terms of quality, animation, storytelling, emotional depth, I won’t overhype it, but I rarely feel as proud of a project as I am with this one. By the end of it, we’ll have 30 outstanding episodes, and when I look back to Dexter, Powerpuff Girls, and even Samurai Jack, I see how our quality dipped due to the process and other factors. This, however, is remarkably consistent. And for a modest budget, having 30 solid, exceptional episodes, I’m incredibly proud of it.

Primal’s Future
Observing the shift in Primal’s narrative structure, it seems quite logical given the season two finale’s outcome. Spear, our protagonist, met a tragic end while battling the vengeful, magic-wielding viking. Yet, Fang survived, going on to sire children and coexist peacefully with Spear’s descendants. Although Tartakovsky’s series may not primarily focus on Spear’s daughter in the immediate future, he has hinted that potential episodes could delve back into this era at some point.
To get a sense of what “Primal” might appear as beyond Fang and Spear, check out the fifth episode of its second season titled “The Primal Theory“. In this Adult Swim series installment, instead of the prehistoric era, we’re transported to the late 1800s where a group of scientists grapple with an escaped asylum patient on a rampage. Now that “Primal” has expanded its time period possibilities, or possibly even alien worlds, there’s no telling what wonders await from Tartakovsky and his team when the third season premieres on Cartoon Network next year.
