Currently, Adult Swim is experiencing great success with the eighth season of “Rick and Morty,” where the Smith family tackles problems related to extraterrestrial and alternate realities. Although Pim and Charlie from “Smiling Friends” don’t directly deal with the issues of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, their series has still proven popular for Adult Swim (a programming block of Cartoon Network). At this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was announced that “Smiling Friends” will not only be returning for a fourth season but also a fifth season, with the possibility of the third season airing later in 2021.
This truckload of evidence underscores the rising fame of the tale about Charlie and Pim, placing it on par with the acclaimed “Rick And Morty” among Adult Swim shows. Few other series from Adult Swim have been renewed for multiple seasons. Despite whispers suggesting that the third season will debut later this year due to a collaborative effort between the company and Adult Swim Canada, asserting that Smiling Friends will return this autumn, an official announcement remains absent. However, the creators of the show are thrilled to share details about their triumphant return and offer tantalizing glimpses into what lies ahead.

The Smiling Friends’ Bright Future
After receiving the renewal notice, co-creator Michael Cusack discussed potential storylines for future seasons with The Hollywood Reporter. He explained that having another season allows them to move away from repeating episodes centered around friends helping a depressed character, which is a staple of the show’s formula. Just as we appreciate about our favorite shows from the past, the opportunity now lies in creating an entire episode focused on a secondary character and delving deeper into their story and the town.
Cusack further mentioned the possibility of shining more light on secondary characters in upcoming episodes, saying, “There are plenty of them! Mr. Frog is always a delight to revisit, as his character truly embodies the madness of our show. Introducing new secondary characters can be tricky because we don’t want to bring back characters that have already been helpful for fear of running out of fresh ideas. However, there are some recurring characters who may return, such as DJ Spit.
Following up on Cusak’s insights, Zach Hadel, one of the creators of Smiling Friends, shared that he does indeed take time to go through comments about the Adult Swim series that has captured everyone’s attention. He explained his approach as such: “After an episode is released, I try to read as many comments as possible for approximately 24 hours. By the time you’ve scanned around 20,000 comments across all platforms, you get a sense of most people’s reactions to that particular episode.
