AEW Grand Slam Preview: Danielson vs. McGuinness, Title Matches, Collision Card

As a gamer who’s been through countless wrestling matches and games, I can confidently say that AEW Grand Slam 2024 is shaping up to be a spectacle worth witnessing. The return of Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness promises fireworks, and let’s not forget the rivalry brewing between Darby Allin and Jon Moxley.

Once again, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) will make a return to Arthur Ashe Stadium for its annual tradition in late September. For the fourth year running, AEW is set to deliver AEW Grand Slam, a two-night television spectacular from this iconic tennis venue located in Queens, New York. Over the years, AEW Grand Slam has become one of AEW’s most significant television events on the calendar, playing host to memorable company milestones such as Bryan Danielson’s debut match against Kenny Omega, The Acclaimed winning the AEW World Tag Team Titles, and CM Punk’s first televised bout since January 2014. With all the ingredients in place, AEW Grand Slam 2024 is poised to uphold the high standards set by its predecessors.

Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness

The current AEW World Champion, Bryan Danielson, is expected to resume his feud with Nigel McGuinness, assuming he receives medical approval. At the AEW All Out event last week, Danielson was viciously assaulted by Jon Moxley and the Blackpool Combat Club. He has been away from TV screens since then to let his injuries heal. Given the extensive promotions for this match, it’s likely that Danielson will be declared fit tonight.

Danielson vs. McGuinness was one of Ring of Honor’s defining rivalries in the 2000s. Danielson went on to WWE, capturing world titles and headlining multiple WWE WrestleMania events, while McGuinness had a short stint in TNA before quietly retiring. McGuinness returned to the ring at AEW ALL IN: London this past August, ending an 11-year retirement. He had been making (clam) digs at Danielson on AEW commentary over the past year, those taunts culminating in McGuinness calling out the American Dragon for a match at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam.

Jon Moxley’s Crusade Continues

Danielson’s influence extends to another major event on the AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam card, specifically the match between Darby Allin and Jon Moxley. Allin has chosen to risk his future AEW World Title match, a title opportunity he earned this past summer, against Moxley. Since rejoining the programming, Moxley has adopted a more villainous role, with a renewed determination to stir up trouble for those original AEW members who have not adapted with the company’s progress over its five-year existence. Moxley expressed some affection towards Allin but still considers him “unprepared” to face Danielson.

AEW Women’s Title and AEW Tag Championships Matches

In addition, notable title bouts will take place in the women’s and tag teams divisions. AEW Women’s Champion Mariah May is set to defend her belt against Yuka Sakazaki for the second time since winning it at AEW ALL IN: London in August.

The AEW World Tag Team Champions, The Young Bucks, line up against Will Ospreay (AEW International Champion) and Kyle Fletcher in a tag team defense. Ospreay and Fletcher are old friends, having started together in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s United Empire, but they haven’t been together since joining AEW permanently. This is their first time teaming up for a two-versus-two match, as most of their history was built in trios matches.
