AEW Star Willow Nightingale Makes History at CMLL x NJPW Fantastica Mania

As a gamer and wrestling fan with a deep appreciation for the lore of professional wrestling, I can’t help but be excited about Willow Nightingale’s latest accomplishment. The way she stepped up when opportunity knocked yet again is truly remarkable.

Over the past weekend, Stephanie Vaquer participated in her last CMLL match and unexpectedly relinquished the women’s championship within a day. The announcement left fans shocked as she had been gaining traction but decided to leverage that momentum to join her preferred wrestling organization. Following her impressive showing at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door against Mercedes Mon?, Vaquer’s performance piqued WWE’s interest, leading them to recruit her swiftly. With the titles now vacant, a fresh face was crowned champion during CMLL x NJPW Fantastica Mania. In this match, Willow Nightingale, Viva Van, and Lluvia battled it out, with Nightingale emerging victorious as she pinned Van to claim the title.

I’ve once again found myself stepping up to help out a professional wrestling company in their time of need. In 2023, when Mercedes Mon? was unfortunate enough to get injured during our title match, I took it upon myself to carry the title as the inaugural champion to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s next major event and pass it on to Giulia. Now, as I prepare for a historic moment, I look forward to strengthening the bond between AEW and CMLL by becoming the first American champion in their esteemed ranks.

After joining AEW, Nightingale has achieved remarkable milestones such as being the inaugural woman to headline an ROH, NJPW event, and an AEW pay-per-view. Last year, she emerged victorious in the Owen Hart Cup Tournament and claimed the TBS Championship title. Her experience with CMLL extends beyond this tenure, having made several appearances earlier in the year, including a tag team bout against Vaquer, Lluvia, and Zeuxis.

I’ve been thrilled to witness the successful collaboration between AEW and CMLL since it was announced in 2023. Over the past few months, this partnership has really paid off. The Blackpool Combat Club, Kyle Fletcher, Thunder Rosa, and many others have stepped into the ring at various shows. Tony Khan has been vocal about his appreciation for their company and the ongoing relationship between us.

I’m a big fan of AEW’s storylines, and right now, Nightingale finds herself in a complex situation with her former friend Kris Statlander and Stokely Hathaway. In the Owen Hart Cup Tournament finale this year, Statlander unexpectedly intervened, enabling Mariah May to win and secure a spot at AEW All In to challenge Toni Storm for the Women’s World Championship.

Stay tuned to Comicbook for updates on AEW.
