As a seasoned gamer of wrestling lore, I find myself captivated by the remarkable story of Adam Copeland and his comeback to the ring. His journey from retirement to reclaiming his physical prowess is truly inspiring, and it’s all thanks to an unlikely hero – the plank!
In 2020, Adam Copeland made a comeback in professional wrestling with an impressive physique, even though his active years were dwindling. Remarkably, he looks as fit as he did prior to retiring in 2011. A significant contributor to this is the fitness company he launched with his long-time wrestling companion, AEW’s Christian Cage. During their retirement days at home, they realized their bodies weren’t as toned as they desired, and this started impacting their health. This was when Copeland started incorporating planking, a straightforward exercise focusing on the core muscles, into his routine. When he observed improvements, Christian joined in, and that’s how they developed their popular Pure Plank core trainer
Copeland recently spoke with ComicBook about the product and how it’s been advantageous for him in his job, particularly since he’s now working from home due to a tibia fracture sustained during AEW’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view event back in May

Essentially, Copeland shared that they didn’t have much experience in entrepreneurship. Instead, their journey began with the desire to regain physical fitness. In retirement, they found themselves growing complacent with their lifestyles, despite maintaining some level of physical activity. However, they felt they could improve, particularly as Copeland’s back problems worsened during the toddler years of their children. Recognizing the importance of being physically fit for a long and healthy life, they decided to focus on getting back in shape, hoping it would also alleviate their physical discomfort
It sounds crazy when I say this to people, but it really all started with planking. I just thought, ‘okay, that doesn’t seem too demoralizing. It doesn’t seem too crazy.’ You know, this is my starting off point. And then little by little as my time started to progress and I started trying different planks I started to get back in shape. I had gone down to Jay’s [Christian] and he just said, ‘man, you’re starting to look pretty good. What’re you doing?’ I said, ‘honestly, it started with planks.’ It really engages everything. So, as I started doing that, my lower back pain started alleviating, and I started getting abs again; feeling better again. Then diet falls in line with that, and I just started to feel like myself.
During that phase, Jay expressed, “You know, there must be a solution for this.” We pondered how to make this experience more user-friendly, considering our perspective. However, it’s not exclusive to us men; it applies to everyone as well. After conducting some investigations, we noticed a gap in the market for what we were looking for. So, we brainstormed ideas. I grabbed a sheet of paper and a marker, sketching out concepts. We then modified and adjusted them, experimenting with different approaches. Eventually, we realized, “Wow, we can actually develop this concept into a product and potentially assist others.”
As someone who’s deeply interested in this product primarily marketed towards athletes, I’ve been thrilled to observe my fellow wrestlers giving it a try in the locker room and experiencing fantastic outcomes. It’s been amazingly gratifying to see this happen organically, without me having to push the product on everyone. Gradually, Claudio [Castagnoli] gave it a shot, followed by Dustin [Rhodes], and many more have started using it, discovering its advantages – an experience that has been nothing short of cool!
24 scant hours post my tibia surgery, I left quite a few wrestling enthusiasts speechless when they spotted me back in the gym. It hasn’t been easy recovering, but I’ve discovered innovative methods using Pure Plank to keep myself fit and ready
I found it extremely beneficial. I discovered that despite any challenges, I can still hold a plank position. However, elevating one foot adds an extra level of difficulty because I need to keep the other foot on the ground. During this process, I recognized how valuable the handles on the Pure Plank are for maintaining balance, strict posture, and proper form. If I could spare just five minutes from my day to do this, it will make a significant difference when I’m ready to resume full-scale training. It’s comforting that I didn’t lose my fitness level during this period, even with my legs up in the air for extended periods.
