On Monday nights, Joe Tessitore is now the primary commentator for WWE Monday Night Raw. Starting this month, he officially stepped into the role, working alongside color analyst Wade Barrett. For now, they form a duo, but in the new year, they’ll join Corey Graves to create a three-person booth on WWE SmackDown. Joe Tessitore has made a fan out of one of professional wrestling’s most legendary voices.

On his podcast, legendary WWE Hall of Famer and AEW commentator Jim Ross praised the new main character of Monday Night Raw, acknowledging him as a reliable talent and a valuable asset to the commentary team.

Ross commented that Tessitore is a reliable choice as an announcer. He’s a valuable addition to their team, and I believe it was a wise decision to hire him. He has a professional appearance and is still relatively young. I’m happy for Joe and offer my best wishes for his success.

JR called the WWE action for multiple decades, often sharing the table with Jerry “The King” Lawler. He took his talents to the larger wrestling world in the late 2010s, doing English commentary for New Japan Pro Wrestling, before becoming a leading voice for AEW upon the company’s launch.

Reflecting on his time with WWE, Ross shared that he thoroughly enjoyed it for over two decades, and looking back, he has no regrets. He added that if the new person takes it seriously and doesn’t feel like they are compromising their standards or “dumbing down” their performance, they will have a fantastic experience as a sports entertainment announcer, since they’ll be sharing stories and keeping viewers engaged and thrilled with what they see.

A significant aspect of being a “narrator” in professional wrestling commentary involves going beyond simply describing the action happening live. It means comprehending why the match is unfolding as it is, recognizing the unique traits of each character, and predicting when a storyline is nearing its climax. Ross emphasizes that he will be attentive to these factors in Tessitore’s future WWE commentary performances.

Ross mentioned, “I wonder how quickly he can learn about the products given the limited time frame,” he said. “Wrestling fans are quite discerning when it comes to commentary. They know what they appreciate, what they don’t, if you mispronounce a name or give incorrect information, and so on. Tessitore has plenty of experience, but I’m curious about the extent of his product knowledge he’s gained since signing with WWE.
