After 12 years bringing RPGs like The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity to life, Avowed director leaves Obsidian for a beloved former indie that’s now part of Netflix

After a span of twelve years with the esteemed RPG greats at Obsidian Entertainment, Carrie Patel, the director of Avowed, is taking a new journey. Patel has made it known that she has joined Night School Studio, the cherished and once independent studio now under the umbrella of Netflix.

Patel announced on LinkedIn yesterday, as reported by Insider Gaming, that he’s thrilled to begin his role as the Game Director at Night School, a game studio owned by Netflix.

In 2013, Patel began working at Obsidian Entertainment as a narrative designer for Pillars of Eternity, a classic role-playing game that received acclaim for its storytelling. She went on to contribute to the game’s additional content and its sequel, eventually rising to senior narrative designer for The Outer Worlds. Later, she assumed the role of game director for the Peril on Gorgon DLC.

She persisted as game director for Avowed, a title that expanded upon the storyline introduced in Pillars of Eternity, receiving positive feedback both from critics and players, according to Xbox’s satisfaction. While it’s not unusual for a director to pursue fresh opportunities after overseeing a large-scale project such as this, her move to a studio owned by Netflix might spark some curiosity due to the perceived instability in their gaming endeavors.

Night School Studio gained recognition for their game Oxenfree, a story-driven adventure title launched in 2016 that swiftly grew into a cult classic. In 2021, Netflix acquired the studio while they were working on a sequel, with Oxenfree 2 making its debut in 2023. Given Patel’s focus on narrative, it appears to be a fitting match for the studio; however, we’ll need to stay tuned to learn more about their future collaborations.
