After Astro Bot’s Success, Expect More Family Games from PS Studios

Last year’s highly praised Astro Bot appears to have proven successful, lending credence to Sony’s move towards creating games suitable for families.

During a recent earnings discussion, Sony’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, highlighted the success of their latest video game, which has garnered several accolades at The Game Awards.

At The Game Awards 2024, our own game Astro Bot swept an impressive four awards, among them being Game of the Year and Best Family Game. This made it the most award-winning title of the event.

Furthermore, the live-service game Helldivers 2, launched in February of the previous year, was honored with both the Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game accolades. Notably, as we aim to grow into genres such as family-oriented titles and live-service games, it’s encouraging that these award-winning categories align with our future plans, signifying a significant step towards diversifying our game portfolio.

In addition to expanding its presence in live service and multiplayer games online, Sony is also aiming to enlarge its collection of family-friendly content. The popular game Astro Bot serves as a notable illustration of this endeavor.

It’s thrilling since Sony boasts a rich history of franchises that cater to all age groups. Although Astro stands out on its own merits, it follows in the footsteps of series like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, LocoRoco, PaRappa the Rapper, LittleBigPlanet, and Ratchet & Clank.

At the debut of PlayStation 5, there was Sackboy: A Big Adventure, a spin-off from the beloved franchise created by Media Molecule, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart followed shortly after.

Astro Bot stands out as Sony’s most triumphant achievement among its kid-friendly PlayStation 5 games, garnering numerous accolades, such as being named Push Square’s Game of the Year in 2024, and experiencing robust sales figures.

Are we on board with Sony expanding their gaming portfolio by including titles like this one? What are your thoughts? Shall we anticipate more family-friendly games from PlayStation Studios? Share your opinions in the comments area below.
