As a dedicated Marvel fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and following the MCU’s evolution, I can confidently say that Billy Maximoff, aka Wiccan, is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. The way Joe Locke brings him to life on screen is simply captivating, and his powers are nothing short of mind-boggling.
Title “Agatha All Along” wrapped up with a burst this week, yet it appears that Billy Maximoff’s tale is merely getting started. The adolescent witch now boasts a firm command over his own powers and talents, although some specifics might have gone unnoticed on the screen. Continue reading to learn more about “Wiccan,” but please be advised – potential spoilers lie ahead!
The character portrayed by Joe Locke, initially called “Teen,” later named William Kaplan, and subsequently Bill Maximoff, is modeled after the Marvel Comics character Wiccan. In the early stages of his on-screen presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wiccan has demonstrated many similar powers as the original version. His magical abilities are genetically inherited from his mother, but he gains a more structured connection to his powers through the study of witchcraft compared to her. Unlike Wanda, Bill employs incantations, symbols, and various techniques to carry out his intentions.
Throughout the series of “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along”, Billy showcases psychic powers like telepathy, telekinesis, and control over others’ actions – most notably when he persuades Lilia and Jennifer to shove Agatha off the Witches’ Road. Furthermore, he can levitate to some degree using telekinesis, as seen in the final scene where he floats above Agatha’s house. His energy attacks that appear blue could also be classified under these psychic abilities.
In the second-to-last episode, Billy demonstrated a unique power: reviving the deceased. Interestingly, Billy had previously revived himself by transferring his consciousness into a new body following the occurrences in WandaVision. With Agatha’s assistance, he managed to perform this feat again, bringing his twin brother, Tommy, back to life. By summoning Tommy’s consciousness and directing it into the body of another child who had recently passed away.
Ultimately, as events unfolded, it was revealed that Billy possessed a similar reality-bending talent, much like his mother, Wanda. Intriguingly, Billy seemed to unintentionally create the “Witches’ Road”, mirroring how Wanda established the “Hex” over Westview. As the story progresses, it appears that Billy might gain finer control over this power, potentially using it in a more limited capacity. Additionally, there are indications that this ability could have been instrumental in freeing Agatha from her initial enchantment at the start of the series, returning her to the real world.
Typically, the comics portray Wiccan with abilities similar to what we’ve seen on screen, but his background is complex. He was initially introduced in a 1986 issue of “The Vision and the Scarlet Witch” by Steve Englehart and Richard Howell, and was later reworked in a 2005 issue of “Young Avengers” by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. In the comics, the powers of the Scarlet Witch and Wiccan are clearly distinct, suggesting that Billy Kaplan, the character who plays Wiccan, may have hidden talents yet to be fully explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as well.
Currently, you can stream both “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along” on Disney+. As of now, it remains uncertain when we’ll see young Billy again in future episodes.
