As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who’s spent countless hours poring over comics and shows alike, I can’t help but feel that something is amiss with the Witches’ Road in Agatha All Along. It’s not just the aesthetics of each trial that scream “Billy” to me, it’s the way Billy seems to be the key to solving them all. If this road really is a creation of his own magic, it opens up a whole new can of worms – from the heartbreaking deaths of Mrs. Hart, Alice, and Lilia, to the potential redemption arc for Agatha.

As we approach the final two episodes of Marvel’s Agatha All Along, it’s become increasingly apparent that The Witches’ Road and its trials hold a striking resemblance to Billy’s personality. While we expected some supernatural peculiarities given the magical nature of the path, the intricacies and trials seem tailor-made for Billy. As we delve deeper into the story (with a better understanding of Billy’s life as William Kaplan), we can’t help but question whether The Witches’ Road is truly a physical entity or if it’s part of an elaborate Westview hex that Billy, unbeknownst to him, might be unwittingly crafting under Wanda Maximoff’s son’s influence.

Agatha All Along: Is The Witches’ Road Billy’s Westview Hex?

From the start, there have been doubts about Agatha Harkness’ account of her journey on the Road, as we suspect she may be deceiving us. Given that she’s the only known survivor, it’s simple for her to claim success since no one else is around to contradict her. However, upon closer examination of how the coven formed and initiated this adventure, it appears that the authenticity of the Road has always been uncertain. While other witches were aware of the Road and believed it to be a myth, both Alice and Agatha confirmed this. It’s Billy, though, who convinces them otherwise and encourages them to embark on it. Furthermore, when the coven attempts to open the road, they encounter difficulties, but it is only when Billy faces danger that events take a turn and he becomes the first to step onto the path. Additionally, Billy seems to possess extensive knowledge about the Road, which is unusual given his obsession with research linked to his identity. This raises questions about whether there may be more to Billy’s story than we initially thought.

The Case for The Witches’ Road Being a Hex

The evidence suggesting that the Road might be Billy’s creation becomes apparent when you closely examine the trials and notice how each one appears to align with elements of Billy’s preferences and passions. Each trial, while focusing on a different witch, seems to carry some influence from Billy. For instance, the first trial corresponds with Jen’s brand aesthetic, which was evident in the flashback showing Billy’s life as William Kaplan, where we saw that Billy admired and was intrigued by this style. The second trial revolves around Lorna Wu and her Ballad, but the flashback also reveals Billy’s fandom for Lorna Wu, as he owned her records and frequently played them, especially Lorna’s Ballad. The third trial has an 80s horror film theme, and in the flashback, we discover that Billy is a fan of horror movies. Lastly, the most recent trial, the 4th, presents fictional witches — notably Maleficent and both the Wicked Witch and Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz.

It’s clear where this conversation is heading: Billy has artwork of “The Wizard of Oz” and its witches in his room, but it isn’t just the visual style that reflects him. Billy appears to have a unique understanding of each situation, often determining what needs to be done and finding solutions. This isn’t to imply that these situations aren’t intended for the other coven members, but rather, Billy seems connected to them in some way.

Does Billy Know It’s a Hex?

It’s intriguing to ponder if The Witches’ Road, filled with elements reminiscent of Billy and connected to him in some way, could be the manifestation of his own magic unbeknownst to him. Perhaps it’s based on an actual Witches’ Road, but this one might be a hex, born from Billy’s personal need for understanding himself and his brother, Tommy. Agatha suggests that Billy resembles his mother, and we know that Wanda’s creation of her own reality led to these events initially. Given Billy’s heightened emotions and desire for answers, it’s plausible he inadvertently brought this version of the Road into existence. He might genuinely believe it’s real, as he’s not adept at using his powers. This adds an engaging layer to the story. Also worth mentioning is that creating his own Witches’ Road aligns with Billy’s abilities, as one of his comic book powers involves warping reality – a case of like mother, like son.

If the Road truly represents Billy’s magical abilities, it raises numerous implications. For instance, it intensifies the sorrow associated with Mrs. Hart, Alice, and even Lilia’s deaths, making them all the more poignant. It also aligns with Agatha and Billy’s discussion about witches being prepared to sacrifice other witches for their objectives – something Billy asserted he wouldn’t do, but now appears less plausible. Furthermore, it provokes speculation about what will occur when we reach the end of the Road. When Wanda confronted the truth about her hex, it was devastating. Similarly, if we reach the end and discover this was all Billy’s construction, it could be just as crushing for him, with no way to predict his response. On a positive note, it might support our earlier theory regarding Agatha All Along serving as a redemption story for Agatha. If it transpires that the Road is indeed a hex created by Billy, Agatha has the chance to do the right thing and assist Billy, rather than antagonize him as she did Wanda. This presents an opportunity for Agatha to improve, which could be where this entire journey has been leading all along.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+. New episodes arrive Wednesdays at 9pm ET.
