As a long-time Marvel fan who’s been following the universe since its early days, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when the Mephisto theories started swirling around WandaVision and Agatha All Along. The anticipation was palpable, the fan demand was undeniable, and yet, here we are with Mephisto nowhere to be found in Agatha’s story.

For several years, fans of Marvel have been eagerly anticipating the introduction of the enigmatic character Mephisto into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The clamor for this devilish figure initially arose during the series ‘WandaVision’, and when he failed to appear, fans shifted their expectations towards ‘Agatha All Along’. A sneak peek for the show hinted at the presence of Mephisto through a symbol on Billy’s mouth, sparking numerous theories. However, as the series unfolded, Mephisto remained unseen. Recently, the series creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer clarified that Mephisto was never intended to appear in ‘Agatha All Along’. In an interview with Variety, Schaeffer explained that she holds little personal interest in the character, and furthermore, there were no genuine plans to incorporate Mephisto into ‘Agatha All Along’.

Schaeffer expressed that he personally hasn’t found Mephisto intriguing, and he hopes it doesn’t offend anyone. However, there was an early draft that included him as a potential antagonist, but he never took it too seriously. Furthermore, due to logistical reasons within the MCU, Mephisto didn’t fit well with their show. He clarified that his inclusion of Mephisto wasn’t meant to mislead anyone, and he admits he may have underestimated the enthusiasm for Mephisto among fans.

It’s important to note that fans have a strong interest in the character Mephisto. When the third episode of Agatha All Along casually mentioned Mephisto, fans were taken aback and started coming up with numerous theories: from speculating that Mephisto was behind the sigil, to suggesting that it was Mephisto who guided Teen onto The Witches’ Road, even proposing that Rio might be disguised as Mephisto. However, when the credits rolled for Agatha All Along, Mephisto was nowhere to be found. It turned out that the sigil belonged to Lilia, the Road wasn’t real but a manifestation of Billy’s magic, and Rio was revealed to be Death instead. Yet, despite Mephisto not making an actual appearance in Agatha All Along, the series still provided fans with something substantial: by explicitly naming the character, it confirms that Mephisto does indeed exist within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if he hasn’t appeared on screen yet.

Marvel’s showrunner for “Agatha All Along” deliberately chose precise phrasing regarding Wanda’s life and death status.

Beyond this, the fact that Mephisto is confirmed to exist, along with Schaeffer’s statement “it wasn’t right for our show” and her confirmation that Mephisto was mentioned during discussions, suggests there may be future plans for this popular villain to appear. This opens up possibilities for further sightings. A strong possibility is a third Doctor Strange film, considering the close ties between Doctor Strange and Wanda’s story due to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Darkhold, Mephisto’s potential appearance might extend beyond a casual reference. Furthermore, the ending of Agatha All Along with Billy and Ghost Agatha venturing out into the world to find Tommy provides another opportunity for Mephisto’s involvement.

Does the MCU Even Need Mephisto?

Instead of Mephisto being a planned character for “Agatha All Along,” and this potentially being disappointing to fans, the absence of his introduction in the series has led to an intriguing question: is Mephisto necessary in the MCU? Other potential big bads with ties to magic and witchcraft within the MCU are under consideration. For example, Blackheart, a character some speculated was Aubrey Plaza’s Rio before her Death reveal, could fit this role. Additionally, Chthon, an Elder God who mastered black magic in Marvel, might also play a part. Notably, Chthon was a popular topic of discussion during “WandaVision” as well.

Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.
