As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that Kathryn Hahn’s potential departure from the role of Agatha Harkness would be a significant loss for the MCU. Having followed the journey of Agatha since her introduction in WandaVision, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation every time she appears on screen.
It turned out that “Agatha All Along” was a major success for Marvel Studios, yet actress Kathryn Hahn hints she may step away from playing Agatha Harkness. Interestingly, Hahn mentioned that Marvel Studios has not reached out to her about potential future collaborations.
Following the occurrences in “WandaVision” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Agatha All Along” initially appeared to be an unappealing prospect. With a string of letdowns, a spinoff centered around a secondary antagonist who lacked connection to the grand narrative was not what fans anticipated to revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) image. However, due to the series’ commitment to character development, its viewership gradually increased week by week. At the core of it lies Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha, whose tale brought two significant Marvel characters into the MCU: Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff/Wiccan and Aubrey Plaza’s Lady Death.
Due to the surprising popularity of “Agatha All Along”, it’s logical to assume that Marvel Studios would soon work on a follow-up series. However, in an interview with the LA Times, Kathryn Hahn shared that she hasn’t received a call about a sequel yet. Moreover, she views the ending of “Agatha All Along” as a fitting farewell for her character. In her own words:
Regardless of the fact that Billy/Wiccan isn’t her biological son, there remains a glimmer of hope for her to possibly fulfill for him what she couldn’t achieve with Nicky. In my view, they complement each other exceptionally well. Of course, I hold immense affection for Joe Locke and cherish this aspect of the role I played immensely. Time will tell where this story leads us, but I found this farewell to this remarkable character deeply moving and fulfilling.
Kathryn Hahn’s Exit Would Be a Loss for the MCU
As Marvel Studios strives to downsize and re-center their approach, the success of “Agatha All Along” demonstrates how they can return to their past brilliance – while repeating one of their biggest blunders. On the one side, this show bravely ventured off the beaten path, prioritizing the narrative over the larger interconnected universe. However, despite its innovative approach, “Agatha All Along” leaves its story arc incomplete, hinting at a potential future that may never materialize.
As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly speculating about potential storylines that could continue where “Agatha All Along” left off. The whispers of a Wiccan series or the rumored Young Avengers project sound promising, but either way, Marvel Studios should seize the opportunity to bring back Kathryn Hahn’s captivating portrayal of Agatha Harkness. Given that Marvel Studios intentionally left an open ending in “Agatha All Along,” allowing Hahn to slip away would be nothing short of a crime.
Even though the situation seems dire, there’s still a possibility. As Hahn mentioned during the interview, “By the end of each performance, I would often think, ‘This is my last acting gig,’ feeling that I had given it my all. However, it reignited my passion and love for acting.” Marvel, if you’re open to more Agatha, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Agatha All Along is currently available on Disney+.
