The new take on Agatha Christie’s “Towards Zero” is now streaming in its entirety on BBC iPlayer. This gripping adaptation revolves around a romantic entanglement among three characters – Nevile (played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen), Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) and Kay (Mimi Keene).
In the storyline, events unfold following Neville’s divorce from Audrey, and his subsequent marriage to a new partner named Kay.
Nonetheless, the three of them wind up spending a summer at Gull’s Point, a place where Nevile and Audrey grew up side by side.
In the series, it’s been discussed that Audrey lived at Gull’s Point as a child since she was an orphan. From a very young age, she shared a bond with Nevile, which started off like siblings but eventually evolved into a romantic connection.
In the story, we encounter Audrey who has recently sought a divorce from her husband Nevile. It’s clear that she has suffered greatly in their union, as they had a poisonous, convoluted, and draining relationship dynamic. However, it seems she is determined to find her independence and break free from this harmful relationship.
As they spent their childhood side by side, they have grown to be highly interdependent, a trait that somewhat resembles childhood camaraderie. It seems there may have been an arrest in their development during their formative years – perhaps they were often found engaging in imaginative play, assuming roles like the lord and lady of a manor house.

In a close bond, they often seem to anticipate each other’s actions, which is a manifestation of their deep connection. However, growing up without learning personal boundaries can sometimes make this relationship precarious, as they struggle to recognize when it’s time to halt their interactions, posing potential risks in adulthood.
In my perspective as a film critic, the relentless hunger for victory and dominance over one another is the primary force propelling their separation. It’s both the attraction and repulsion at play in this story.

Regarding the show, screenwriter Rachel Bennette stated that she needed to “revise a few characters’ portrayals,” specifically focusing on altering the personalities of Neville and Audrey as well as modifying their interpersonal dynamic.
Bennett mentioned that Audrey is notably less visible throughout the book and it proved challenging to maintain this across the three episodes. However, she manages to remain just as captivating and charming as she is in the book, although her character presents itself differently.
