Age of Mythology Retold: Freyr Build Order Guide

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Freyr is a godsend for beginners in Age of Mythology: Retold. His versatile nature and beginner-friendly build order make him an excellent choice for newcomers looking to dive into the world of Norse mythology.

In the game “Age of Mythology: Retold”, Freyr is one of the main Norse deities that players can control, and his build order is particularly suitable for beginners as many players have found success using it.

Besides being an approachable deity for beginners, Freyr is also adaptable in various scenarios. This quality makes him a solid pick regardless of the challenges you encounter, once you grasp his fundamental strategy and build sequence.

In this tutorial, we’ll provide you with an effective basic build sequence to help you kickstart your gameplay as Freyr.

In Age of Mythology: Retold as a gamer, I’d kick off my Freyr build order by dispatching my first three peasants and the Ox Cart towards a Gold Mine. At the same time, train another peasant and send them to fell a nearby tree for Wood. While these guys are busy, I might as well let my initial Berserk unit scout around the map to explore its hidden treasures.

Once you’ve gathered a grand total of 150 Gold, consider switching your 3 mining civilians to search for Food instead. You can expedite this process by personally instructing your civilians to deposit the mined Gold into the Ox Cart when the mine reaches approximately 98% full (2949 out of 3000).

As a dedicated player, I’m eager to continue my strategy of training Villagers and assigning them the task of foraging for Food. My goal is to maintain around 8 civilians focused on Food collection, while ensuring one civilian is also gathering Wood.

Once you’ve positioned your Berserk unit correctly, it’s time to instruct them to construct a Temple. Maintain the production of Civilians, aiming to have 12 on Food and 1 on Wood. You’ll be prepared to progress when you reach a population of 15/15. The choice of Minor God is largely up to your preference, but we suggest Ullr for this build order.

Advancing to the Classical Age

Once you’ve selected your Minor Deity and begun progressing, you’ll find yourself wanting to adjust your Civilians to this configuration: 6 on Food, 3 on Wood (move them to a forest at this juncture), and 4 on Gold. Strive to construct an Ox Cart as swiftly as you can. Position one Ox Cart near the forest and another near the Gold Mine. At the same time, have your Berserker erect a House close to the location of your chosen Temple.

Moving forward, let’s proceed with training one Hersir and one Civilian concurrently. Once prepared, dispatch the Civilian to collect Wood resources. The Hersir, on the other hand, should be fully trained by the time we transition into the Classical Age.

If you opted for Ullr upon advancing, now is the time to deploy Ullr’s Asgardian Bastion ability. Have your Hersirs and the initial Berserk unit construct an Asgardian Hill Fort close to your Temple. Meanwhile, utilize the Draugr you earned from progressing through Ullr to create some disturbance for the enemy.

During the ongoing construction phase of the Asgardian Bastion, focus on training at least 3 Hersirs and ensure that the civilian population reaches these numbers: 6 Food, 4 Wood, and 9 Gold. Whenever feasible, make one of your mining civilians take a break to construct a House near your initial Town Center.

In the current stage of Age of Mythology: Retold with Freyr, there’s not much left to construct in terms of the build order. Now it’s time for you to aim to seize a Settlement to set up your second Town Center. Keep in mind that the tactics and building needs from this point onward will differ significantly based on your choices and your opponent’s actions!
