Age of Mythology Retold: Gaia Build Order Guide (Eco Boom)

Age of Mythology Retold: Gaia Build Order Guide (Eco Boom)

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in strategic RTS games under my belt, I can confidently say that Age of Mythology: Retold has become my latest obsession. The eco-boom playstyle, particularly when playing as Gaia, is an absolute delight for those who enjoy a more methodical and resourceful approach to victory.

In the realm of Age of Mythology: Retold, I find myself wielding the mighty Goddess Gaia. She truly shines when I adopt an ‘eco-boom’ approach to gameplay, nurturing my earthly resources and expanding my territory at a steady, sustainable pace.

An “Eco Boom” or “Economic Boom” strategy is centered mainly around resource collection and creation. This approach enables you to generate units at a quicker rate compared to others, thereby winning through the power of quantity! Typically, this strategy shines best when played in a defensive manner as well.

If you find this approach suits your style, continue reading and let’s walk you through an introductory build sequence tailored for the Gaia character.

Gaia Build Order Guide (Eco Boom)

To kick off the ecological surge in Age of Mythology: Retold, it’s advisable to make one of your initial civilians construct an Economic Guild initially. After they complete building, have this civilian begin foraging for Food. Meanwhile, task another civilian with food gathering as well. In essence, you should have two civilians focused on Food collection and one Economic Guild constructed right from the start.

As soon as my initial three Oracles appear, I like to deploy them in a spread-out formation, exploring different parts of the map. Meanwhile, I prioritize kicking off research for both the Hand Axe and Pickaxe upgrades at the Economic Guild right away.

At this stage, consider deploying your Gaia Forest as well. Position it close to your original Town Center for easy access to plant Gaia Trees, thereby accelerating your Wood collection. Upon placement, assign two of your citizens to gather Wood from the Gaia Forest.

After that, let’s train one more civilian and assign them to mine at the Gold Mine. In essence, it would be ideal to have two civilians working on Food production, two civilians gathering Wood, one civilian mining for Gold, and three oracles exploring the map. Maintain this setup until you accumulate 80 units of Wood.

Once you’ve accumulated 80 Wood, relocate your civilians from the Gold Mine temporarily and instruct them to construct a Manor. After they finish building, have them return to mining Gold again. Then, train three additional civilians and direct them towards gathering Food as well. While juggling these tasks, remember to move your Oracles across the map to continue scouting new areas.

After you manage to gather a total of 5 civilians for food collection, assign one more civilian to training. Immediately task that new civilian with constructing the temple and then dispatch them to the gold mine straightaway.

With your temple now complete and ready for action, it’s time to focus on achieving the following civilian distribution: 5 on Food production (using Gaia Forest), 3 on Wood collection, and 3 on Gold gathering. Once you reach a food supply of 400 units, consider transitioning to the Classical Age. At this stage, feel free to select any Minor God you prefer as they won’t significantly impact your build order for the Gaia Forest.

As you move forward, strive to establish another Gaia Forest as a defensive barrier, if feasible, ensuring it blocks any likely approaches of the enemy forces.

Classical Age Build Orders

At an early stage in the Classical Age, you have two options to choose from. One option is to focus on maintaining only one Town Center. This choice offers flexibility as it requires less stringent resource management due to its more relaxed budget. If you prefer this route, simply strive for these conditions:

  • 5 Civilians on Food
  • 3 Civilians on Wood
  • 3 Civilians on Gold
  • Train 1 Extra Oracle
  • Get the Shaft Mine and Bow Saw upgrades from the Economic Guild
  • Build 2 Military Barracks and 1 Manor

The alternate build order path here is to instead get a Village Center as soon as you reach the Classical Age. This will allow you to get more Civilians faster as you progress, but it does have a tighter resource budget. You’ll need to be careful about Food in particular. Nonetheless, here’s what you need for this second option:

  • 4 Civilians on Food
  • 3 Civilians on Wood
  • 4 Civilians on Gold
  • Build 1 Village Center using 3 Gold Civilians and 1 Wood Civilian
  • Get the Shaft Mine and Bow Saw upgrades from the Economic Guild
  • Aim for 8 on Food, 4 on Wood, and 4 on Gold after construction and upgrades

Between the two choices, we suggest going with the first one as it’s more user-friendly when it comes to gameplay. However, the second option has an advantage: it allows for a rapid production of Civilians compared to other civilizations, although it is generally more challenging.

From this point forward, it’s essential to trust your instincts and adapt to the opponent’s actions. This wraps up our guide focusing on the eco-boom strategy for Gaia in the Age of Mythology: Retold.
