Age of Mythology Retold: Odin Build Order Guide

Age of Mythology Retold: Odin Build Order Guide

As a seasoned veteran of the Age of Mythology series and a devout follower of Odin, I can confidently say that this Norse deity is a true gem for beginners. His focus on bolstering units from Great Halls and his unique Raven scouts make him an incredibly efficient choice in battle.

In the game “Age of Mythology: Retold,” I’ve found Odin, a Norse God, to be quite newbie-friendly. His design makes it relatively straightforward to establish an effective build order, and his overall efficiency is impressive, making him a great choice for beginners.

As a devoted admirer, I’d say primarily, Odin excels in enhancing combat-ready troops from his Great Halls. These warriors are already formidable on their own, so the ability to further augment their power is truly advantageous. To add to this strength, Odin also gains exclusive access to Raven scouts. Although they can’t attack, these agile units respawn without cost and provide a clear, comprehensive view of the entire map, making them invaluable allies on the battlefield.

In this tutorial, we’ll provide you with a common starting build sequence for Odin, which makes transitioning smoothly into the Classic Era a breeze.

To kick things off when you’re playing as Odin in Age of Mythology: Retold, start by constructing a few Ox Carts. Next, task two of your initial villagers with gathering food for sustenance. Lastly, delegate the third villager to construct not one but two separate Ox Carts.

After the Villager finishes constructing the Ox Carts, position him by a tree for Wood collection. Station another Ox Cart next to him and another near your Gold Mine. Utilize Odin’s Great Hunt ability at the spot where your hunters are positioned to acquire additional Food resources early on. Meanwhile, have one of your hunters take a brief pause from hunting to construct a House. Once they complete building, encourage them to resume their hunting activities.

In the next step, you’ll need to educate one Dwarf and one Villager. Assign the Dwarf the duty of gathering Gold at the Gold Mine, while the Villager joins your initial Villagers in searching for Food. Additionally, train another Villager and delegate them to collect Wood. Direct them towards the same tree where you previously placed a Villager and an Ox Cart.

After establishing it once, follow the same procedure thrice more when you’ve got enough resources to train additional Dwarves and Villagers. Meanwhile, designate one of your Villagers for constructing a Temple. It doesn’t matter which one, just make sure they resume their previous duties post-construction. Your goal should be to achieve this distribution among your population by the time the Temple is completed: 7 Villagers on Food gathering, 4 Villagers on Wood chopping, and 4 Dwarves focusing on Gold mining.

Classical Age and Beyond

Each time, the Minor God you opt to specialize in will hinge on your game strategy and your opponents’ actions. Regardless of choice, Odin is versatile, so there’s no essential one to select. What truly counts is making a swift decision and progressing as soon as possible!

As you progress, prioritize fortifying your defenses over exploring the map for resources, given that Odin is a character optimized for defense. Make sure to strengthen your defenses significantly as you advance towards the Classical Age.

What we do recommend is that you start researching the Hand Axe (120 Food, 50 Gold) and Pickaxe (50 Food, 120 Wood) upgrades as quickly as possible. It’s also a good idea to set up a Great Hall quickly and train a Hersir at your Temple. You can use the Hersir to gather Relics or simply scout the map as you wait to advance.

Regardless, that concludes our building guide for Odin in Age of Mythology: Retold. Since the game’s dynamics are not fixed, there isn’t a specific build sequence to suggest further. From this point onward, your strategy and the opponent’s moves will significantly impact the course of the game!

In this game, you can play as Thor, who is one of Odin’s sons and a significant Norse deity. If you’re interested in giving it a go, take a look at our Thor character build guide!
