As a frequent flyer who has faced my fair share of turbulence in the skies, I must say that this latest Qantas incident with Dakota Johnson‘s film “Daddio” is simply unacceptable. It’s one thing to encounter technical difficulties, but broadcasting an R-rated movie without warning and making it impossible for passengers to turn it off? That’s a whole new level of discomfort.
Critics may have loved Dakota Johnson’s latest role, but this flight did not.
Following the selection of the Rated R movie “Daddio,” starred and co-produced by the actress alongside Sean Penn, as the sole in-flight entertainment on a Qantas Airlines flight from Sydney, Australia to Tokyo, Japan on October 5th, the airline issued an apology for their mistake.
The airline acknowledged that the film shown was inappropriate for the entire duration of the flight and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused. They then switched all screens to a family-friendly movie for the remainder of the journey, which is their usual procedure when an individual’s movie choice isn’t feasible.
During the flight, instead of individual movie players causing technical issues, the airline opted to play a film for everyone. However, Qantas mentioned they will examine the process used to select the movie, specifically ‘Daddio’, which carries an Motion Picture Association R rating due to its explicit language, sexual content, and brief nudity.
Although the company interrupted the movie during the flight, several passengers took to social media to voice their displeasure over the technical issue.
Following a one-hour delay, the pilot opted to depart despite limited options, resulting in the cabin crew playing a film across all screens. Unfortunately, there was no choice to adjust or halt this movie.
The traveler, showing some offensive chat messages from the movie as evidence, verified that the airline did eventually opt for a more child-friendly film. However, it took approximately an hour for this change to be implemented.
The passenger mentioned that it was extremely awkward for everyone, particularly since there were families and children traveling.
As a die-hard aviation enthusiast, I can’t help but share some other recent turbulences that have shaken the skies, apart from the Qantas incident that left passengers dismayed. In March, an Alaska Airlines flight experienced quite the hiccup when a door plug came loose during its journey from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California. With 177 passengers and crew on board, it was a nail-biting moment indeed!
Speaking to the BBC, a passenger described the force as incredible, clinging for safety as it threatened to pull them off. Remarkably, even with my shoe tightly secured, it was still drawn away.
Later on, Alaska Airlines expressed their apologies for the problem that arose due to an unnoticed flaw during the examination of their Boeing plane.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional team who displayed professionalism beyond measure and skillfully navigated our journey back to Portland. In a public statement, I, Ben Minicucci, CEO, acknowledged their efforts and emphasized the safe return of both flight and passengers. To those on board, I deeply apologize for the ordeal you encountered during this flight.
