This Spring sees the return of “My Hero Academia” with a fresh anime adaptation based on its side story, making it essential viewing for fans who particularly admire Shota Aizawa from the main series. As for the original “My Hero Academia”, it’s preparing to make a grand comeback later this Fall as it enters the final season of its TV anime, wrapping up Izuku Midoriya’s extended narrative. Over the years, one of the series’ challenges has been its limited time to fully explore its stories and characters.
In the anime series My Hero Academia, an excessive amount of time is dedicated to exploring Deku’s journey and that of other significant characters essential for the later storylines, which leaves less focus on other characters like Shota Aizawa. Despite his role as Deku’s initial mentor in crucial battles, there isn’t much depth given to his past, as it is mostly hinted at throughout the main series. However, this will be rectified with the introduction of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime spin-off, where Aizawa’s history will be further developed and explored.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Finally Gives Aizawa the Spotlight
The debut episode of “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” offers a fresh perspective on the ongoing anime series. Set in an alternate Japan, years prior to the main storyline, our protagonist Koichi Haimawari transitions into a neighborhood hero. However, he soon finds himself entangled in a larger predicament when vigilante hero Knuckleduster recruits him, as a new drug is found to intensify people’s unique abilities, turning them into potential threats. As the episode concludes, Aizawa makes his initial appearance.
In the primary “My Hero Academia” storyline, fans mostly learn about the nature of Aizawa’s heroism rather than witnessing it directly. Characters often discuss Eraser Head, his selfless actions in saving various individuals, yet his primary role as a teacher and mentor to Class 1-A keeps him largely on the sidelines during action sequences, except when he steps in to rescue them temporarily. Occasionally, we get intriguing glimpses of his abilities, but these are usually not within the broader context of his street-fighting hero style. However, this is about to change with the upcoming anime series as it delves into Aizawa’s past, providing a deeper look at his career as a hero in action.
In this scenario, Aizawa swiftly intervenes to prevent Knuckleduster from harassing an innocent bystander, making him the first genuine hero that Koichi and their group encounter. Given his close connection to street-level activities, unlike All Might who is always prepared for nationwide emergencies, Aizawa becomes an ideal addition to their team as they now face a dangerous street drug that exacerbates the situation. However, the true appeal of Aizawa’s participation unfolds later on.
Aizawa Is Very Important to My Hero Academia: Vigilantes
In a Japan still untouched by an abundance of heroes, I find myself drawn into the thrilling world of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. As a self-proclaimed neighborhood protector, Koichi steps up due to the scarcity of police and legitimate heroes. This void makes Aizawa’s presence even more crucial in the narrative. Though he doesn’t approve of their illegal activities (and frequently intervenes when possible), his willingness to bend the rules for the sake of saving people resonates with many fans, adding depth to this captivating tale.
In essence, Aizawa transitions into a significant character in the spin-off anime, offering viewers a glimpse of him as a hero instead of merely his teacher persona from the original series. This change also reveals an unexplored aspect of Aizawa that was subtly suggested in the main storyline. However, the most intriguing aspect for dedicated fans might involve a plot twist, though it should be noted that this detail could potentially spoil something significant.
In the grand finale of the main “My Hero Academia” series, Aizawa plays a pivotal part due to Kurogiri’s true identity being unmasked. This character appears to be connected to both Aizawa and Present Mic’s past, yet their backstory remains largely unexplored. That’s because this origin story is actually developed in the spinoff, “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes”. Although it occurs later, it’s a key reason why fans of “My Hero Academia” should check out this side series. It provides essential information and narrative that you won’t find elsewhere.
