AJ Mendez Reveals Crazy Is My Superpower Series Heading to A&E

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few TV adaptations of books, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation for AJ Mendez’s upcoming series “Crazy Is My Superpower“. On one hand, the premise of a memoir about overcoming personal struggles and embracing mental health issues resonates deeply with me – as a gamer, we often find solace in the escapism provided by our virtual worlds, but it’s the real-world battles that truly test our mettle.

These days, AJ Mendez is extremely occupied, and this involves a forthcoming television series stemming from her memoir titled Crazy Is My Superpower. Since the initial announcement of the show back in 2017, there hasn’t been much news about it; however, during an interview with The Comicon regarding her new comic series Day Of The Dead Girl alongside Aimee Garcia, Mendez revealed that not only is the series still being developed, but it will air on A&E once it finally hits television screens (according to Fightful’s transcript).

As I sat down for the chat, Mendez candidly shared that penning this book would be an arduous journey given my reticence when it comes to disclosing personal matters. Yet, I recognized the significance of sharing my experiences, as it could potentially make a positive impact on someone’s life.

Initially, it was challenging for me as I am one of the most private individuals out there, hardly sharing anything about myself. I’m like a sturdy wall that doesn’t yield easily. However, when many people listen to you, what you say holds significance. There is worth in that, and it requires thoughtfulness. Despite my reserved nature, I decided to reveal a life lesson I garnered from confronting my mental health challenges. This aspect of me, this struggle, I am willing to expose to the world, hoping it may aid others too, as Mendez expressed.

As a gamer speaking personally, my life story revolves around navigating poverty, homelessness, and grappling with mental health issues that were unfamiliar to me and affected my family too. Instead of shying away from these challenges, I’ve learned to view them as sources of strength – transforming them into armor and weapons that have become my greatest assets in creative pursuits. This acceptance and redefinition of my unique circumstances has been a significant influence on my artistic journey. In essence, I’m embracing this complex, sometimes challenging mindset that makes me who I am.

Death Isn’t The End

In her upcoming venture, Mendez is teaming up with Aimee Garcia on “Day of the Dead Girl,” a project that will also feature illustrations by Belen Culebras. This series, as described by Mendez, promises to be a captivating blend of beauty and blood, and Garcia expresses her eagerness for this production to showcase Mexican culture in a unique and less commonly portrayed manner. Here’s the official synopsis for “Day of the Dead Girl”:

The lesson that death is not always the final chapter will be painfully clear for Coroner Sam Castillo. This becomes evident when, as she returns to her hometown, it is besieged by a malevolent entity that feeds on supernatural victims. As a staunch advocate of science, Sam clashes with her spiritual mother Ana, the head of a witch coven skilled in Brujeria. However, their differences take a backseat when the coven’s members begin to be slain, compelling them to cooperate and identify the murderer before their town’s Day of the Dead celebration devolves into a grisly scene of dark magic. Sharing a bathroom with her mother, already challenging enough, is just one of Sam’s many trials.

Day of the Dead Girl hits comics stores on October 9th.
