As a lifestyle expert with a background in sports psychology and healthcare, I am deeply saddened by the tragic fate of Medrick Burnett Jr., a promising young athlete who lost his life after a head injury during a college football game.
A college football star has met a tragic fate.
Approximately weeks following a head injury he sustained during a football match, Alabama A&M Bulldogs player Medrick Burnett Jr. was tragically pronounced dead on November 27, as confirmed by Jefferson County deputy coroner AJ Clifton to NBC News on November 29. However, Clifton did not disclose the specific reasons behind the linebacker’s passing, as reported by the news outlet.
On October 26th, during a football match against Alabama State University, held in the Magic City Classic, a 20-year-old athlete suffered a head injury, as reported by NBC News.
In a heartfelt post on a GoFundMe page established for his recovery, his devoted sister, Dominece James, shared our shared anguish. She revealed that I had endured multiple brain hemorrhages and inflammation of the brain. To alleviate the relentless pressure, a tube was inserted to drain the excess fluid. However, after two grueling days under this intense strain, we were left with no choice but to resort to a craniotomy, a drastic measure aimed at preserving my life.
Two days prior to the official confirmation of Burnett’s demise, the university inadvertently posted a notice on their site, claiming he was deceased. The statement attributed this information to a “family member” who supposedly informed the faculty about his passing.
Dr. Paul A. Bryant, athletics director at Alabama A&M, stated in a November 27th statement that Medrick was not just an outstanding athlete, but rather a remarkable young man whose positive spirit, leadership, and kindness made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Though no words can truly capture our sorrow, we are moved by the resilience of his family, who supported him through this difficult and unthinkable situation.
Hours later, the statement was deleted and the school issued a retraction.
The school stated, as reported by ESPN, that our team immediately followed the wishes of the family member by sharing the sad news with the A&M community and beyond. However, following a communication from UAB Hospital this afternoon, we have learned that he is still alive. We deeply regret the error in the information we previously shared.
