Alien: Covenant Star Michael Fassbender Has Surprising Answer About Franchise Future

There’s a possibility that a follow-up to both “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” might be in development, and Michael Fassbender has expressed interest in reprising his roles as David 8 and Walter One. In an interview with Esquire last week, he discussed the most significant roles of his career, including his work on the Alien prequels. Fassbender stated that he’d be happy to play these characters again or collaborate with director Ridley Scott once more. However, it seems that a new movie in this series might not happen, but as “Alien: Romulus” demonstrated, there are always opportunities to incorporate synthetic characters into the narrative.

As a huge fan of Ridley’s work, I’d be thrilled to collaborate with him again on a Covenant sequel. Working with him was an unforgettable experience; his talent is nothing short of inspiring. Despite the challenges that come with making big films, he manages to excel effortlessly, showcasing true mastery in his craft. Simply put, Ridley is phenomenal.

It’s exciting news, as Fassbender – who has consistently expressed interest in reprising his Alien character but occasionally seemed less enthusiastic – appears more inclined towards revisiting the role. He was the sole character to continue from Prometheus to Covenant, and his presence would be crucial for a third chapter of the story.

History of the Potential Covenant Sequel

In 2012, the movie ‘Prometheus’ hit the screens, and in 2015, director Ridley Scott expressed his ambition to expand it into a three-part series. The film ‘Alien: Covenant’ was released in 2017, earning profits at the box office but not matching the success of ‘Prometheus’. Critics gave it a lukewarm reception as well. This tepid response may have dampened enthusiasm for the trilogy among the studio, fans, and even Scott himself.

In 2018, 20th Century Studios initiated early preparations for a script under the tentative title “Alien: Covenant 2.” This script called for the return of Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and Danny McBride to their respective roles. At one point, some plot details were leaked – the film was set to focus on the character David, who would journey to LV-426, the planet where the crew of the Nostromo discovered the xenomorph in the original Alien movie. On this planet, David aimed to build his own paradise but would face pursuit by the Engineers.

In the following year, Disney took over 20th Century Studios, which appeared to be a significant obstacle in moving forward with this sequel. At that time, the company expressed an interest in developing “new tales” for the Alien series and reconsidering plans for a sequel to Covenant, given its poor box office performance. The most recent updates from August 2021 suggest that the possibility of a sequel to Covenant remains unclear at best.

Despite the fact that the movie “Alien: Romulus” hasn’t been released yet, the way it has utilized Ian Holm’s image for an android named Rook, who shares similarities with the original Alien’s Ash, suggests a strong possibility of Michael Fassbender reprising his role. Given that Fassbender’s likeness has been used for various synthetic characters in the past and considering David’s resilience in the series, it is plausible that Fassbender could return to the role in different ways, whether there’s a “Covenant” sequel or not.

Currently streaming on Hulu, you can watch “Alien: Covenant.” In addition to that, the newest installment, titled “Alien: Romulus,” is also available for streaming there.
