Noah Hawley’s forthcoming FX series, titled Alien: Earth, is poised to broaden the legendary sci-fi horror realm as it introduces the xenomorph danger right onto humanity’s home soil. This eagerly awaited production, crafted by the genius behind Fargo and Legion, will premiere on August 12th, simultaneously on FX and Hulu. The narrative unfolds in the year 2120, a not-so-distant future marked by corporate titans, and offers a layered tale that intertwines corporate politics with spine-chilling terror. In this grim setting, Alien: Earth presents fresh characters such as Wendy (portrayed by Sydney Chandler), a sophisticated hybrid synthetic created by Prodigy Corporation, a formidable rival to the infamous Weyland-Yutani corporation.
In the storyline of “Alien: Earth“, events are set in motion when the Weyland-Yutani spaceship, USCSS Maginot, collides catastrophically with a significant city on Earth. To investigate and recover any valuable tech from their competitor, Prodigy Corporation sends Wendy and her team to the crash site. Instead of corporate secrets, they discover something much more perilous: the Maginot was carrying diverse alien species, including the infamous facehuggers. This discovery leads to an outbreak of xenomorphs on Earth, which occurs exactly two years before the events portrayed in the initial “Alien” film. The precise timing of the series enables it to finally answer a long-standing question within the franchise that has remained a mystery for 46 years.
The Lingering Mystery of Weyland-Yutani’s Special Order 937
1979’s film “Alien” directed by Ridley Scott unfolds with the crew of the space tug Nostromo stirred from hibernation by their computer, Mother. This artificial intelligence has detected a strange signal and alters course to explore its origin on the moon LV-426. According to protocol, a group ventures down to the lunar surface and encounters an abandoned alien spacecraft filled with countless leathery eggs. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Executive Officer Kane (John Hurt) is assaulted by a creature that adheres to his face. Ignoring Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) warnings, they bring him back on board, ultimately releasing the xenomorph onto their ship.
In their desperate struggle for survival, Ripley uncovers a shocking truth about the ship’s computer operator, Ash (played by Ian Holm). It’s revealed that Ash is an android who had been carrying out a clandestine command from Weyland-Yutani, known as Special Order 937. This order mandated him to securely transport the alien organism back to the company for examination by its biological weapons division. The directive was clear: “Crew expendable.” This revelation indicates that Weyland-Yutani had prior knowledge of the organism on LV-426 and deliberately dispatched the Nostromo with its crew to retrieve it. However, neither the movie nor its sequels explain how Weyland-Yutani came to possess this information.
Alien: Earth Can Finally Connect the Dots
Earth” may offer insights into why Weyland-Yutani behaved as they did. The trailers suggest that Weyland-Yutani had been capturing and transporting xenomorphs for at least two years before the Nostromo was redirected to LV-426. It’s not clear yet when or how the crashed USCSS Maginot first obtained the xenomorph samples, but since it was tasked with cataloguing various invasive alien species, “Alien: Earth” will probably delve into Weyland-Yutani’s fascination with dangerous creatures. At the very least, the crash of the Maginot on Earth would have been Weyland-Yutani’s first uncontrolled and devastating encounter with the xenomorph, providing them with valuable data about its lethality. This data would undoubtedly fuel the company’s weapons division’s greed.
Equipped with insights from the Maginot incident, Weyland-Yutani’s mission in the original Alien was no longer a risky guessing game. The biological signal detected on LV-426 would have been identified as a second opportunity to secure the valuable resource they had previously encountered and lost. This prior understanding also explains why they were willing to go to such great lengths, even planting an android among the crew and issuing cold-blooded Special Order 937. Consequently, the new series can delve into the details of how the entire ordeal that Ripley experienced unfolded as a result of Weyland-Yutani’s unscrupulous research projects.
