As a lifelong cinephile with a soft spot for sci-fi horror and a particular fondness for the Alien franchise, I must say that the recent revelation about xenomorph “vision” in Alien: Paradiso has sent a shiver down my spine. Having watched every installment of this terrifying saga since the original hit theaters back in 1979, it’s fascinating to finally understand how these relentless creatures track their unsuspecting prey with such uncanny precision.
At long last, the enigma surrounding the vision of the xenomorphs in the “Alien” series has been resolved, a question that fans have pondered for years. Contrary to popular belief, these creatures do not rely on eyes to perceive their surroundings. Instead, they possess exceptional senses, enabling them to track, penetrate, and elude with an almost supernatural accuracy, as portrayed in numerous “Alien” films. While the visual abilities of the Predators have been extensively discussed, the “Alien” franchise has been relatively silent on this matter… until recently.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!
20th Century Studios and Marvel Comics’ upcoming series, titled Alien: Paradiso, unfolds 11 years after the occurrences in Alien: Romulus and 26 years prior to the events of Aliens. The narrative takes place on “Paradiso,” a lavish island resort world, which serves as a cover for illicit activities such as smuggling and arms trading, thanks to its strict policy against weapons.
The narrative revolves around Ricky Valentine, head of an arms dealing gang, who travels to Paradiso for negotiations with a cartel aimed at giving him dominance over illicit trade in the colonies. However, unsuspecting Rick finds himself unknowingly involved in a sinister scheme – as it turns out, the cartel is transporting xenomorph embryos to Paradiso, which are being nurtured within living hosts. To make matters worse, Colonial Marshals have two undercover agents stationed at Paradiso and are aware of this operation. All this intrigue becomes secondary though, when the contact from the cartel arrives at the resort, only to experience a xenomorph erupting from his chest.
Alien Reveals How Xenomorphs “See”
In the opening and closing scenes of “Alien: Paradiso #1,” there’s a portrayal of the xenomorph perspective, shedding light on how these alien creatures hunt their prey. As you will notice in the following excerpt, these creatures possess an unusual form of spectral vision, capable of detecting various wavelengths that human eyes cannot perceive. This extraordinary ability allows them to “see beyond the ordinary, perceiving not only the electrical signals within a human body but also the pheromone trails emitted by a frightened individual.
In the second part, we witness the xenomorph’s perspective as it emerges from the chest of the cartel messenger. Immediately, it senses a narrow opening in a nearby vent as a possible exit and manages to elude capture by doing so.
This is a pretty big reveal for the Alien franchise, as it helps explain virtually every one of the xenomorph attacks we’ve seen in the film – starting with the original Alien (1979). With this type of extraordinary sensory “sight” through that elongated eyeless head, the human prey never stood a chance – not the crew of the Nostromo, the Colonial Marines or colonists of LV-426, or all the doomed souls aboard Renaissance station in Romulus. ‘
Regrettably, it’s also worth mentioning that David Fincher’s Alien 3 presents a significant contrast to the norm. This film is known for its unique approach, as it employs a perspective of the xenomorph that is often disorienting, using spinning camera movements on extended dolly tracks.
