Earth,” part of the Alien franchise on FX, is set to fulfill Joss Whedon’s long-held vision for “Alien: Resurrection” from over two decades ago. Coming after the 2024 release of the standalone prequel “Alien: Romulus,” “Alien: Earth” will serve as another prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, taking place in 2120, just two years before the USCSS Nostromo’s voyage in Alien. Created by Noah Hawley, who is known for his work on Fargo and Legion, “Alien: Earth” will finally bring to life one of the franchise’s most chilling concepts.
Earth’ hints at a chilling narrative. It’s the first live-action TV show within the Alien franchise. The crash of the USCSS Maginot on Earth unleashes its lethal Xenomorph cargo, creating a massive issue for the five powerful corporations that govern Earth – Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. Among them is Wendy (played by Sydney Chandler), one of the first Hybrids – humanoid robots with human consciousness. Alongside a group of soldiers, she’ll confront this new alien danger, in a setting that’s seldom explored in the Alien franchise.
By establishing the latest installment of the Alien series on Earth instead of a distant planet, moon, spaceship, or space station, the Xenomorph threat will become even more chilling and tangible. With a political undertone and critique on artificial intelligence, Alien: Earth promises to be an influential chapter in the franchise, making it exciting that the series is innovating with this fresh take on horror. This change of setting could also honor the alternate endings from Alien: Resurrection.
What Was Joss Whedon’s Alternate Plan For Alien: Resurrection’s Ending?
1997’s “Alien: Resurrection” saw the return of Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, despite her death in Alien 3. However, since its release, screenwriter Joss Whedon has expressed dissatisfaction with the film. In a 2005 interview with Bullz Eye, he stated that “they said the lines… mostly, but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they possibly could do.” Whedon also mentioned that “they changed the ending,” referring to his original plans to have the Newborn alien arrive on Earth.
Earth will eventually bring Whedon’s vision of an Earth-bound alien confrontation to life.
2015 test footage from Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., revealed that Joss Whedon’s initial plan for “Resurrection” wouldn’t have the Newborn passing through a tiny window hole in the Auriga, but instead, it was intended for commanding officer Perez (Dan Hedaya) to suffer this fate. If the Newborn hadn’t died in this way, Whedon had prepared multiple alternative endings, with the most significant one featuring a battle between Ripley 8, Call, and the Newborn in a forest, where the alien’s corrosive blood would have sparked a forest fire. Other potential settings included a junkyard, a desert, and even a maternity ward; however, none of these were realized.
You Might Have Forgotten The Alien Franchise Has Already Brought Xenomorphs To Earth
In the upcoming film Alien: Resurrection, we can expect a tribute to Joss Whedon’s original ideas, as the title implies that the fight against the Xenomorphs will occur on Earth. It’s possible that this fact may be overlooked, but it’s important to remember that in the 2004 movie Alien vs. Predator, it was revealed that Xenomorphs had been roaming freely on Earth for over a century. These creatures were born from human sacrifices performed by the revered Predators at locations like the Antarctic pyramid, and this narrative unfolded further in the sequel to that crossover movie.
2007’s movie “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” introduced a hybrid creature called the Predalien in Gunnison, Colorado. A veteran Predator and the townspeople joined forces to eliminate this monster, but the story was criticized for being divisive and uninspiring. The upcoming “Alien: Earth” series offers a chance to revitalize the Earth-based stories within the Alien franchise. However, the grounded setting could potentially slow down the plot, but with a strong political theme and an impressive new cast, this series is poised to become one of the most significant installments in the Alien series.
The interstellar series titled “Alien: Earth” premieres with a double episode on August 12, 2025. Subsequent episodes will be aired weekly on Tuesdays across FX, Hulu, and Disney+ platforms, catering to global viewers.
