The Alien series has recently seen a resurgence, delving deeper into its own history. Ridley Scott revitalized the films with a fresh perspective by exploring the backstory of the 1979 Alien in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, while director Fede Álvarez continued this trend with Alien: Romulus, filled with references to the franchise and connections between the stories. In addition, Marvel’s Alien comic series have been expanding on the films’ content by creating new backstories, and now the newest anthology series, Alien: Paradiso, is introducing a key Alien character as its surviving heroine.
The tale unfolds on the weapon-free planetary resort, Paradiso. A smuggler/arms dealer named Ricky Valentine, accompanied by his crew, arrives here to seal an exceptionally profitable deal with a cartel. However, this deal involves alien specimens, specifically xenomorphs, which are currently being nurtured within living hosts. Tragically, one of these creatures bursts from its host in the dining hall, causing widespread panic and leading to a rigorous quarantine.
In the second installment of “Alien: Paradiso,” Ricky begins to understand the flaws in his strategy as the guests are confined within the dining room. Tsula Kane, Ricky’s stern-looking bodyguard, swiftly grabs meat forks, knives, and other sharp cutlery, arming herself for potential danger. Ricky scolds Tsula for being overly cautious, but Tsula defends herself, arguing that she is resourceful and prudent – a justification that is underscored by a flashback scene revealing the ominous influence of the “Alien” franchise’s grim history on her mindset…
Alien Introduces Kane’s Daughter
In the initial installment of the “Alien” series, a creature known as a Chestburster was implanted inside the body of a character named Kane, who was the executive officer on board the commercial towing vessel USCSS Nostromo. This shocking discovery was made when Kane encountered facehugger eggs within a wrecked Engineer spaceship on LV-426. Unfortunately for him, he was attacked by one of these parasites. The crew, including Ellen Ripley, were unfamiliar with the facehugger and didn’t know how to remove it. Things appeared to be resolved when the facehugger died unexpectedly, but Kane then awoke. However, their joy turned into horror during a supposed family dinner when the Chestburster burst out of Kane’s body.
In the continuation of “Alien: Paradise,” I, as Tsula Kane, uncover a startling truth about my lineage – I am the daughter of Thomas Kane, who perished on the doomed Nostromo spacecraft. A poignant flashback transports me to a moment where a Weyland-Yutani corporation emissary visited my mother, shattering our world with the revelation that the nature of my father’s demise and the Nostromo’s destruction meant the company would only honor his basic life insurance policy. My mother was left devastated by the lack of answers about Thomas’s passing and the financial burden to support us. This harsh lesson, etched in my memory, underscores the unforgiving nature of life and our powerlessness against its cruelty.
Through this unveiling, “Alien: Paradiso” has disclosed the actual main character and central theme of its narrative. Contrary to what was suggested in issue #1, it’s not the Colonial Marshals Dash Nanda and Lydia Reeves who will be our primary protagonists, but rather Tsula. She is the one being referred to as the “final girl.” The tale appears to be evolving into a moral lesson about a cycle of violence, delving into how the initial xenomorph’s violent emergence and rampage on the Nostromo led to a new version of Tsula who is now poised to inflict the same brutality upon them. For devoted “Alien” franchise fans, this is another intriguing piece that contributes to the larger puzzle about where the series might be heading next.
Alien: Paradiso is available at Marvel.
