Alien: Romulus Box Office Pushes Film to Become Second-Biggest Hit in the Franchise

As a seasoned gamer and Alien franchise enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to the Alien saga, Alien: Romulus, has truly taken me by storm. It’s not every day that we witness such an exhilarating blend of horror, action, and mystery that keeps us on the edge of our seats from start to finish.

In its initial release last month, “Alien: Romulus” made an impressive debut at the box office, raking in $42 million. This was the second-highest opening for the Alien franchise, just behind 2012’s “Prometheus”. Now, two weeks later, “Alien: Romulus” has moved up to secure the second position in the overall earnings of the Alien series.

After the festivities of Labor Day Weekend have passed, it is projected that “Alien: Romulus” will hold a global box office total of approximately $283.5 million. This places Fede Alvarez’s film comfortably above the second-place “Alien” movie, which was 2017’s “Alien: Covenant.” The latter managed to earn slightly over $240 million globally.

As a die-hard Alien fan, let me tell you that when it comes to the all-time standings of this legendary franchise, only one film has managed to outpace Alien: Romulus – and that’s Prometheus, the movie responsible for the series’ highest opening weekend earnings. If Romulus aims to overtake Prometheus and claim the title as the highest-grossing Alien film ever, it’ll need a heck of a lot more than what it currently has under its belt. Back in the day, Ridley Scott’s return to the series (Prometheus) raked in an impressive $403 million plus, which still reigns supreme across the entire Alien franchise.

An Alien: Romulus Sequel?

With such a stellar box office reception for Alien, it’s only natural that fans of the series are pondering whether the release of Romulus might spark the creation of a new installment in the franchise.

Recently, I shared my thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter about a possible sequel for “Romulus.” Although it wasn’t my immediate focus while we were making the film, I did ponder over potential expansions of the story once it was completed.

The director stated that they often don’t consciously consider sequels, as creating movies is a natural process for them without the need for franchise or sequel planning. They have only recently learned this terminology during their last decade of work. For the director, it has always been about telling a good story. Once the initial story was finished, they began contemplating what might happen if the characters reached Yvaga. They mused that it could be a dreadful place that they idealize, and thus naturally started thinking about where the story could go next and what would transpire. It then occurred to them that this sounds like the beginning of a sequel.
