Alien: Romulus Crosses Major Box Office Milestone After Disney Originally Planned Hulu Release

As a die-hard fan of the Alien franchise who has witnessed the highs and lows, the thrill and the disappointment, I can confidently say that Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus has rekindled my love for this iconic series. The movie’s success at the box office is a testament to its terrifying horror roots and the enduring appeal of sci-fi films.

Did you recall when the film Prey was exclusively released on Hulu, eventually earning a cherished spot in the Predator series? The curiosity persists as to why Disney and 20th Century Studios opted against screening it in cinemas, given that its favorable reception from both audiences and critics hints at potential box office success. Interestingly, it appears that Disney has taken note of this oversight with regard to the Alien franchise’s sister series.

Fede Alvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” has revitalized the Alien series by revisiting its terrifying horror origins as established by Ridley Scott. This latest installment has been a hit with both audiences and critics, and it’s now clear that the franchise is thriving in this new chapter. Over the past weekend, “Alien: Romulus” surpassed $100 million at the domestic box office, demonstrating the enduring appeal of science fiction and horror movies.

In North America, Romulus is the second Alien movie to surpass a significant box office milestone, following the release of Prometheus in 2012. Worldwide, Romulus has grossed over $330 million, making it the franchise’s second highest-earning film (still lagging behind Prometheus).

Had it been released directly on Hulu, Alien: Romulus would’ve made $0 at the box office.

Another Alien on the Way?

With such impressive box office earnings, it’s natural for Alien fans to ponder if the release of Romulus might signal a new addition to the series.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez expressed thoughts about a possible sequel to “Romulus”. Although this idea didn’t dominate his thoughts while making the movie, he did ponder over potential expansions of the story afterwards.

The director expressed that they have an organic approach to creating sequels, without consciously considering them as part of a franchise or series. For this filmmaker, the focus has always been on storytelling. Once the initial project was completed, their thoughts naturally drifted towards what might occur in Yvaga and whether it would be wonderful or terrible. Given their perspective, they assumed it would likely be a dreadful place that characters fantasize about. This line of thinking led them to consider where the story goes next and what happens subsequently, eventually realizing that these musings resemble ideas for a sequel.
