Alien: Romulus Delivers Franchise's Best Rotten Tomatoes Score in Nearly 40 Years

As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that the anticipation for Alien: Romulus has been palpable, and after reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews, my excitement has reached new heights. Having grown up with the original films, it’s heartening to see the series return to its horror roots, evoking the claustrophobic terror that made the first two movies so iconic.

The Alien series is gearing up for another nationwide theater takeover, and this time it’s backed by some of the best reviews the franchise has seen in years. Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez (known for Evil Dead), aims to bring the series back to its origin, re-creating the nerve-wracking tension that was present in Ridley Scott’s 1979 original. The end product is a spine-tingling film that has left many critics enamored.

Initial critiques for the movie “Alien: Romulus” came in during the afternoon of Wednesday, and it swiftly garnered the highest Rotten Tomatoes rating among all Alien series films since James Cameron’s “Aliens,” first released in 1986. As of writing this piece, “Alien: Romulus” boasts an impressive 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 86 reviews, making it eligible for the Certified Fresh label.

It’s likely not surprising that the original Alien film directed by Ridley Scott and its sequel Aliens, directed by James Cameron, are generally considered the strongest of the series based on their reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gives Alien a 93% rating, while Aliens gets a perfect 94%. Unfortunately, the subsequent four movies didn’t fare as well; they all received negative reviews on the review aggregator site. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant both got Fresh ratings, but neither managed to surpass the 75% mark.

Romulus bears a significant genetic resemblance to the initial “Alien,” steering the series towards its terrifying origins by emphasizing a compact narrative. This approach has ignited curiosity among fans, yet simultaneously posed a challenge for Alvarez to present his creation to Ridley Scott. Remarkably, the originator of the franchise found the latest addition appealing.

Alvarez had shared that “He stepped into the room and exclaimed, ‘Fede, I’m at a loss for words! It’s phenomenal,'” before. He expressed that it felt…Being able to have such a revered master in my family, who I deeply admired, watch one of my films – specifically this one…and engage me in conversation for an hour about what he enjoyed about it was simply extraordinary. One of the highest compliments he gave was, “The dialogue is excellent. Are you the writer?” Indeed!

In the movie “Alien: Romulus,” we have Cailee Spaeny, known for her role in “Civil War,” David Jonsson from “Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy,” Archie Renaux of “Shadow and Bone,” Isabela Merced starring in “The Last of Us,” Spike Fearn from “Aftersun,” and Aileen Wu. The director, Fede Alvarez, who has previously worked on films like “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe,” is at the helm. He co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues, his frequent collaborator from “Don’t Breathe 2.” The characters in this film were originally created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
