As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that the anticipation for Alien: Romulus has been palpable, especially given the absence of Ridley Scott as director after his impressive prequels. However, when I heard that Fede ?lavarez, a director whose work in horror I admire immensely, would be at the helm, my excitement reached new heights.
In a surprising turn for the “Alien” franchise, the latest installment titled “Alien: Romulus” will not be directed by Ridley Scott who has been at the helm for quite some time. Although Ridley Scott declined to direct sequels to his original “Alien” (1979), he regained control with the prequel films “Prometheus” (2012) and “Alien: Covenant” (2016). Now, it’s another filmmaker, Fede Alvarez, who is stepping into Scott’s shoes for “Alien: Romulus”. Known for his chilling work in the remake of “Evil Dead” (2013) and “Don’t Breathe”, Alvarez understands the significance of carrying on the legacy of one of his cinematic heroes, a responsibility he does not take lightly.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, our team from ComicBook got the opportunity to chat with Fede Alvarez and the cast of Alien: Romulus. In this conversation, we couldn’t help but ask Alvarez about the unique experience of not only encountering but collaborating with one of his idols.
Absolutely he’s seen the movie and thank god he loved it and has been super supportive of the film, every step of the way. It was a total privilege ge, right? He’s the master – he’s the f*ckin’ master of what do, of this genre [horror]. He’s the Kurosawa of this; like there’s not many directors that got to their ’80s and are still going strong and making such amazing movies like Ridley, so total privilege for me to be able to share time with him, and discuss the film with him, and learn so much from him about how to make a movie.”
Previously, Alvarez mentioned that during the making of Alien, Scott expressed a sense of pressure to him, starting with a passionate (yet short) message at the beginning of production: “Dear Fede, I wish you success, health, and good fortune. Don’t mess up. Sincerely, Ridley Scott”.
During a recent conversation with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Alvarez elaborated on Ridley Scott’s reaction upon watching the movie.
Lavarez clarified that he wanted Ridley to view it first before anyone else. He added that people warned him about how challenging Ridley can be, especially when it comes to his films, and that was evident in the difficulties Ridley faced during Blade Runner 2049, a movie Lavarez considered a masterpiece. However, Ridley had reservations with it because it’s personally significant as it’s his own work.
Regardless of the opinions expressed by fans or critics, Fede Alvarez shares that Ridley Scott is a fan of Alien: Romulus.
Alvarez shared that he entered the room and exclaimed, “‘Fede, I’m speechless! This is fantastic,'” he stated. However, for Alvarez, it felt momentous…His family recognized it as one of the most significant moments in his life to have a mentor whom he highly respected, watching a film he created – especially something like this…and engaging with him for an hour about what he enjoyed about it. One of the highest compliments he received was, “The dialogue is brilliant. Are you the writer?” Yes!
The movie titled “Alien: Romulus” is currently playing in theaters and IMAX. In this film, you’ll see Cailee Spaeny, who was in “Priscilla” and “Civil War”, as well as David Jonsson from “Industry”. Other notable cast members include Archie Renaux from “Shadow and Bone”, Isabela Merced known for “Transformers 5” and “Madame Web”, Spike Fearn from “The Batman”, and Aileen Wu.
