Alien: Romulus director on fighting Ridley Scott’s notes: “It’s intimidating”

As a fan who has grown up with the Alien franchise, stepping into the director’s chair for a new installment feels like being handed the keys to my childhood. The pressure is immense, and Fede Álvarez’s admission of feeling “terrified” resonates deeply with me. I can only imagine what it must feel like to have Ridley Scott, the mastermind behind this terrifying universe, challenging me to prove myself worthy.

Taking on the task to pen and guide a fresh installment in one of cinema’s cherished franchises is undoubtedly an anxiety-inducing endeavor, as confirmed by Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez, who occasionally felt a chill of fear while working on the project.

“In his view, approaching a project as a writer/director should be done with a sense of defiance or breaking the norms. He suggests coming in with the attitude, ‘I’ll prove to you how an Alien movie is made.’ Ridley Scott wants me to embrace this spirit when I start working.”

He went on to say: “However, after you’ve created it and secured a deal, when you present your work to them, that’s where the humbling realization hits – you’re struck with awe at what you’ve accomplished, and then fear sets in. You think, ‘My goodness, how can I presume to show Ridley Scott how an Alien film should be made?’ Yet, that’s the right attitude.”

After reviewing Scott’s comments following the movie, he incorporated some suggestions, yet not every piece of feedback was implemented.

He stated, “I engage others in disputes,” he said. “Just as he suggested we should clash – every producer desires a director with a clear vision.”

“You’ve consistently expressed that desire, and the excitement lies in fulfilling it. Working with Ridley has been an awe-inspiring and mind-blowing journey, and it was an additional thrill to have James Cameron provide feedback at one point, as he graciously watched the edit and shared his insights.”

He added: “It’s intimidating, but it should never be something that paralyses you because fear is the worst enemy of creativity.”
