In the movie “Alien: Romulus,” it’s important to note that Ellen Ripley was present, according to director Fede Álvarez. During a recent fan event hosted by Collider, he shared his vision of Ripley being among the main characters on the Romulus station. While this idea fits well, it conflicts with some previous storylines, which has sparked mixed reactions. However, the easter egg is now officially confirmed, as both Álvarez and the visual effects team have explained. This could potentially hint at a future “Alien” film or perhaps the sequel that Álvarez himself is already developing.
The story of Romulus unfolds during the gap between the events depicted in Alien and its sequel, Aliens. As fans are aware, during this period, Ripley was in a state of cryogenic preservation within her escape pod, the Narcissus. Due to an unknown mishap, the pod failed to return Ripley home, instead leaving her in suspended animation for 57 years before she was eventually discovered. Even in Aliens, this scenario is suggested as a potential conspiracy, which Álvarez found difficult to accept. He found it even more challenging to believe after Romulus disclosed that the corporation Weyland-Yutani had successfully traced the xenomorph through space.
He stated that if Weyland-Yutani managed to locate the Xenomorph amidst the Nostromo’s wreckage, it would be relatively straightforward for them to find the Narcissus, the escape shuttle Ripley used. He reasoned this because the Narcissus is equipped with a beacon, making it easier to trace. Moreover, he suggested that the Narcissus could serve as a research hub for understanding the ongoing situation, and therefore, they should retrieve it. Given this assumption, he surmised that the Narcissus must have been inside the Renaissance station at some point.
Additionally, he aimed to provide an explanation for Ripley’s disappearance between the movies Alien and Aliens, where she was supposed to be on her way to Earth in stasis only to be picked up later in Aliens. He wondered about why this happened, so his theory was that she had already been retrieved.
He believed that if Weyland-Yutani found the alien ship (Nostromo) and knew Ripley escaped in a specific shuttle (Narcissus), it would be simple for them to find her because the Narcissus has a trackable signal. He also thought that finding the Narcissus could help with their research on what was happening. Thus, he assumed that they found and picked up Ripley at some point, which explains why she went missing for 40 years between Alien and Aliens.
Alvarez has subtly introduced an interquel for Ripley within the scope of Romulus, offering distant glimpses rather than a full exploration. He explained, “It’s a colossal station, isn’t it? You only see a tiny fraction of its corridors. Consider the size. So there’s ample space for Ripley to be active, and when she realized the whole thing was about to explode, she had to rush back to the Narcissus and escape.
Álvarez shared an interesting detail that isn’t simply fan speculation: “In the movie, if you pay attention and look carefully, you’ll spot the Narcissus plant appearing twice in the background as the characters walk by. It’s clearly visible on the wall,” he explained. “Moreover, since the character cannot die, when the space station explodes at the end and collides with the rings, it was essential to depict the Narcissus leaving the scene. I requested this detail, and they were thrilled about it, assuring me that they would include it.
In the film “Aliens”, this new addition doesn’t get a mention at any point. The story begins with Ripley waking up on a space station near Earth, where she shares her account of the Nostromo incident. However, there’s no hint about a brief stopover at Renaissance Station in her narrative. Yet, this omission provides a plausible explanation for her long absence and amplifies the sinister power of Weyland-Yutani even more.
Currently, viewers have the freedom to determine if the Easter egg in question enhances the narrative or not. However, should this element be included in subsequent sequels, its significance might become unquestionable. Meanwhile, catch the latest installment “Alien: Romulus” on Hulu now!
