As a fan, it’s clear that the movie “Romulus” has become the focal point and sparked intense discussions within the ongoing Alien series. Director Fede Alvarez skillfully returned the franchise to its horror roots with “Romulus”, which grossed over $350 million worldwide and received rave reviews from viewers. It seems that a sequel to “Romulus” is imminent, but the Alien franchise has always been known for its innovative approach in each new installment, delving into fresh territory. If given the opportunity, I, along with director Alvarez, would aim to continue this tradition of reinvention with the forthcoming “Romulus” sequel.
In a recent chat with Empire, Alvarez shared that he and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are working hard to decipher the puzzle for an upcoming sequel of ‘Alien: Romulus‘. Their goal is to include fresh life into existing characters and elements from ‘Romulus’, while simultaneously exploring uncharted territories.
Rodo Sayagues and I are currently developing it,” he shared with Empire. “We’re thrilled about its potential. We’ve addressed most of the aspects I’ve long wanted to see in Romulus, and reintroduced many elements that I had missed. From hereon, we can venture into unexplored territories.
He mentioned that venturing to an uncharted location within the Alien series, accompanied by familiar movie characters, promises an exhilarating experience filled with unprecedented discoveries.
Alvarez further explained that merely developing a plot for an “Alien: Romulus” sequel doesn’t mean the movie will be made. They are striving to discover a tale deserving of the Alien series, and if they can’t manage this, it seems as though Alvarez is prepared to abandon plans for a second film.
He notes that the error often lies in creating sequels merely because they are feasible and due to the success of Romulus, a sequel could certainly be produced. However, he wouldn’t proceed unless we have an exceptional idea for it – something truly deserving of being called a sequel.
On multiple instances since the premiere of Romulus, the director has expressed this particular feeling or opinion.
He said back in November to io9 that we only start working on something when we discover a story that truly excites us, something like ‘This is a movie worth creating’. So, we’re currently in the process of searching for such a compelling narrative, one that deserves the investment of everyone’s time and lives up to its title. Otherwise, it’s important not to produce a sequel merely because the original was successful.
