What Is Alien: Romulus About?

The upcoming sci-fi movie titled “Romulus” is being marketed as more of a spin-off than a direct sequel in the “Alien” series, with a group of young space explorers encountering the most horrifying creature known to the universe. It’s worth noting that the storyline for Romulus was inspired by a deleted scene from James Cameron’s “Aliens,” which featured young colonists.

He shared that his initial idea was to explore a unique perspective by focusing on characters who aren’t experts or scientists; instead, they’re young adults. This approach appealed to him because it allowed for an audience connection, as these characters are less familiar with space realities compared to professional astronauts. When the characters are professionals, they possess extensive knowledge, which can sometimes make the audience feel inferior. However, when they’re young adults, they’re still learning, much like the audience might be when encountering space for the first time. He further explained that this lack of expertise allows for a more relatable and engaging storyline, as these characters are not yet proficient at operating complex equipment like airlocks.

He went on, “It’s likely that they grew up together since their parents worked on the same ship. That’s how they became acquainted… They share a rich history because they are each other’s only family. In many ways, they behave more like surrogate siblings; some of them even resided in the same household. Many of the main themes in the movie revolve around siblinghood and its significance. Interestingly, the larger plot involving Romulus and Weyland-Yutani is intertwined with this as well.”
