All Creatures Great and Small star says Tristan will unpack unexpressed trauma over time

As a war veteran and a fan of All Creatures Great and Small, I eagerly anticipate this year’s Christmas special. The return of Tristan, played by Callum Woodhouse, promises to delve deeper into his character, unraveling the psychological impact of his wartime experiences. It’s not every day that one gets to witness a fictional character grappling with the harsh realities of war, and I can’t wait to see how this unfolds on screen.

2021’s All Creatures Great and Small is expected to be more bustling than 2020, as baby Jimmy has been born, and James and Tristan have come back home following their military service.

Tristan, played by Callum Woodhouse, returned in season 5, having been away during season 4.

Upon his comeback, he concealed his disturbed mind, stemming from the battles he witnessed, by resorting to alcohol and jokes. However, hints have been dropped by Woodhouse that we might witness him dealing with this past trauma.

It’s clear he hasn’t had as much direct combat experience as the infantry or soldiers typically do, but make no mistake, it wouldn’t have been an easy stroll; there would have been challenging instances he had to face.

It’s clear that he must have formed acquaintances in that place who he may not have reconnected with later. He may have encountered some potentially dangerous scenarios, some of which he hinted at, but later transformed them into humorous stories.

He went on to say: “However, I’m confident there are aspects he hasn’t fully discussed or revealed, things he was hiding behind alcohol and humor in this series. That’s typically Tristan’s style, but I believe we’ll learn more about these hidden parts as time goes on.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that this year’s Christmas Special finds me, Nicholas Ralph, reprising my role as the cherished vet, James Herriot. This time around, I’m juggling the heartwarming chaos of our son Jimmy’s first birthday with the holiday cheer, all while sharing the joyous season with my wonderful wife, Helen, portrayed by Rachel Shenton.

Samuel West reappears, portraying the unpredictable Siegfried Farnon, who leads his younger brother, Tristan (played by Woodhouse), on a crucial wartime journey, showing him the correct path.

Simultaneously, Anna Madeley’s character, the dedicated housekeeper Mrs. Hall, is engrossed in Christmas preparations when an unforeseen announcement disrupts her peaceful routine.

This installment showcases a lively group of farmers, creatures, and villagers, all in the picturesque setting of 1940s Yorkshire. Notably appearing as Enoch Sykes is Duncan Preston, known for his role on Coronation Street.

The 2024 Christmas special of All Creatures Great and Small will be aired on Monday, December 23rd at 9pm. If you’d like to catch up on seasons 1-5, they are available for streaming on My5. And if you’re interested in reading the original stories, James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small can be purchased from Amazon.
