As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with these talented actors from All Creatures Great and Small. Their shared experiences and unique perspectives have brought the beloved series to life, and it’s fascinating to get a glimpse into their personal lives as well.
Before the upcoming heartfelt holiday special, the cast of All Creatures Great and Small chat with TopMob about what’s in store, and how they plan on celebrating their own Christmases.
Who is the wisest in All Creatures — Siegfried, James or Tristan?
Samuel West, it’s generally believed that Siegfried considers himself the most wise due to his age, but I personally believe James might be the wiser one. This is because James has had to mature rapidly as he has taken on the role of fatherhood, something Siegfried never experienced.
Nicholas Ralph exhibits a strong academic focus and excels in veterinary matters, whereas Tristan shines more in social engagement aspects.
Callum Woodhouse The diplomatic answer is that they balance each other out very well.
Who is the wisest actor?
Callum That’s probably Sam.
Nicholas Me and Callum make one fairly wise actor between us.
Regarding Samuel, while I might have assisted Nicholas in finding his initial position during the filming of “All Creatures”, he showed great aptitude and quickly got into the swing of things. Therefore, I wouldn’t dare to suggest any guidance for him. Our cast is quite insightful!
As a cinephile reminiscing about my own childhood, I can’t help but wonder what the most cherished gifts were that I received back then. If you don’t mind sharing, could you tell me about the best presents you got when you were a kid on your first birthday?
Back in the day, Callum was quite fond of his collection of comic book action figures. The final scene from the initial X-Men movie shows them atop the Statue of Liberty, and he even had a miniature replica of the iconic monument that could accommodate Wolverine. I believe it’s still tucked away somewhere.
My sibling and I received a Nintendo 64 as a gift, making each holiday season feel like a dream come true. Despite our differences, this shared passion brought us closer together.
Samuel possessed a vintage chemistry kit, one where self-poisoning was still an option. Inside, there was a conical flask and a miniature spirit burner meant for heating objects. I yearned to become a chemistry professor, allured not only by the crucibles but also the thrill of explosion experiments.
What’s your Christmas Day like?
At home in Teesside, Callum enjoys playing games like charades, Pass the Bomb, and Articulate. We’ll start the day with breakfast and Buck’s fizz, followed by exchanging gifts. In a typical British fashion, we tend to begin drinking early in the morning and continue until everyone is exhausted, usually around 6 PM.
Nicholas Mine’s very similar. Buck’s fizz in the morning, Christmas music, a great singalong, open the presents, then just eating and drinking. And Christmas specials, baby.
Samuel This festive season, I’ll be performing the character Malvolio in Twelfth Night at the RSC. It’s a fantastic fit for Christmas, somewhat like an adult pantomime. On Christmas Eve, there’s a matinee performance, followed by an evening show on Boxing Day. We’ve been graciously invited to dine at a restaurant in London on Christmas. No one will need to wash dishes there. However, I mustn’t overexert myself as we still have eight shows that week. Naturally, all my friends are planning to attend the performance on Twelfth Night itself.

On Christmas Day, my routine used to consist of visiting all the grandparents’ homes following lunch, but we no longer do that now. It’s during those times that we feel their absence the most, I believe.
My sibling serves in the merchant maritime service. Since our father was involved in the oil industry, he spent time away from home occasionally during my childhood, and it’s my brother who is doing that now. This upcoming holiday season, however, he plans to return for Christmas, which will definitely add to the festive atmosphere.
This holiday season marks the first Christmas for me since my father, Timothy West, passed away. He was the closest person I’ve ever lost, and I can’t quite fathom what this holiday will feel like other than a profound emptiness in the pit of my stomach. My parents, who were often traveling, had been rather independent, frequently going on cruises to places like India as early as February. Unfortunately, they won’t be around for this celebration again, but their absence will be felt in a much more poignant way this year.

The All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special will air on Monday 23rd December at 9pm.
