All Creatures star says Tristan masks troubles with drink and humour on his return

As a devoted admirer of the All Creatures Great and Small series, I find myself deeply engrossed in the rich tapestry of characters and their captivating journeys. The anticipation for Season 5 is palpable, especially with Tristan’s (Callum Woodhouse) imminent return. However, Samuel West’s insight into Siegfried’s perspective offers a fascinating glimpse into the profound impact of war on our beloved characters.

In the upcoming season 5 of All Creatures Great and Small, Tristan’s return is something to look forward to. However, actor Samuel West (playing Siegfried) has hinted that the character who departs Skeldale for military service in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps is not identical to the one returning.

“He’s obviously changed,” he explained. “And he’s changed in ways that I don’t fully understand. He’s obviously seen some horrible things which he’s not talking about. And he’s obviously masking with drink and good humour.”

West also went on to say that “Tristan’s war stories” make Siegfried feel “old and a bit out of touch”, but it’s not long before normal service resumes and the brothers realise they’re still a solid duo.

Even though we can outsmart an old grumpy farmer, which is quite satisfying,” he continued, “it’s not the same thrill as when Carmody and Siegfried were together, examining animal waste or playing cards.

In the 2023 Christmas special, it’s clear that West expects challenges for Callum Woodhouse’s character (Tristan) to bond with Carmody, as per Siegfried, who has been adjusting well and was even granted a bedroom by Siegfried himself, hinting at a growing friendship.

He noted they were as dissimilar as night and day. Notably, Tris has a knack for being grating, yet I adore him dearly,” could be a natural and easy-to-read paraphrase of the original sentence.

Woodhouse expressed a hint of apprehension about coming back to the show, fearing that he might feel a tad out-of-date.

He remarked that his initial day’s work was spent in The Drovers, arguably the ideal location for filming Tristan’s first scenes upon return. “We started early in the morning and gradually got into the swing of things,” he continued. “However, returning from our lunch break, I must admit, it felt like I hadn’t left at all.

I effortlessly fit right back in, as if no time had passed, sharing the same witty conversations and laughter with the original cast and team members who are still here. It was truly delightful.

Season 5 of All Creatures Great and Small picks up in the spring of 1941.

After caring for animals in Egypt, Tristan will be “teaching new trainees who are about to be deployed to locations similar to where he’s worked.

In other locations, Helen (Rachel Sheton) is juggling the care of baby Jimmy since James (Nicholas Ralph) is stationed at RAF Abingdon. Meanwhile, she’s pondering her part in the community as World War II intensifies. Siegfried is diligently maintaining the surgery, Mrs. Hall assumes a fresh position, and Carmody expresses eagerness for advancement.
