All Creatures’ Tristan and Siegfried reach turning point in their relationship – and James’s trauma comes back to haunt him

As a long-time fan of All Creatures Great and Small, I must say that this latest episode was a poignant reminder of the complexities of human relationships, particularly between siblings. The dynamic between Siegfried and Tristan has always been intriguing, with their camaraderie often overshadowed by their differences.

And so we turn the page on another chapter of All Creatures Great and Small.

Tonight’s episode (October 24th) marked the end of season 5, and it saw Tristan stepping in to assist Siegfried with his vet responsibilities as Carmody had recently left.

Following some initial resistance, he eventually consented to help his sibling, thanks in part to a gentle nudge from Mrs. Hall. With this encouragement, they ventured to examine a horse afflicted with a rash together. However, their collaboration was far from seamless as they frequently disagreed on the most effective approach for treating the animal.

Not too long past, Siegfried worried about his brother’s well-being during his duty in Cairo. However, things quickly returned to usual, and on their departure from the farm, they kept debating their methods for the task at hand – until the vehicle abruptly stopped running.

In light of no alternative paths, I found myself embarking on a lengthy journey back to Skeldale House, sipping from the elderflower wine we’d procured to alleviate our predicament. Yet, our spirits remained heavy, leading us to engage in sporadic bouts of constructive criticism rather than meaningful conversation.

However, it transpired that a piggyback ride along with some unwanted personal time (and an abundance of wine) was exactly what they required to make progress.

Siegfried expressed that upon Tristan’s arrival, he had wished for a heart-to-heart conversation between them, and that instead of slipping back into old habits, they might strengthen their bond by spending more quality time together.

“We’ve never been big talkers,” he replied.

Siegfried exclaimed, ‘Why can’t this be possible?’ He then proposed the idea of occasionally spending time together, a thing they’ve yet to do.

“I would enjoy your company,” he added.

“I’d like that too,” responded Tristan.

In a surprising turn of events, the pair of siblings showed a unique openness, signaling a possible transition into a more grown-up stage of their bond, a development that’s been eagerly anticipated for quite some time.

In the meantime, James fell ill with a high fever, which was a sign of brucellosis, leaving him confused and disoriented.

Since Siegfried and Tristan were occupied elsewhere, the surgery facility was closed for the day, allowing Siegfried to rest in bed for recovery. Throughout the day, however, he started experiencing hallucinations related to his military past. It was during this time that Banerjee, a man with whom he had undergone training, appeared to him in these hallucinations.

In my role as a team member, I found myself taking over from James when he was declared unfit for duty. Banerjee and Hibbert were paired with another pilot instead, but our mission ended abruptly due to an unexpected attack. Enemy fire brought down the aircraft, leaving devastating consequences. Hibbert didn’t survive the impact, while Banerjee sustained severe burns and is currently receiving specialized medical care in a hospital.

In my fandom experience, I’ve found myself grappling with a twinge of guilt after James’ safe return on numerous occasions. However, during my recent hallucination, it was as if the full weight of that emotion came crashing down upon me, leaving no doubt in my mind about its profound impact on him.

He regretted not being able to attend because he was prevented from flying, and tears streamed down his face. He expressed remorse for letting someone down, taking full responsibility. ‘I am deeply sorry,’ he said, acknowledging the blame solely rested on him.

James continued to utter those words, trapped in the throes of grief as his fever raged on.

In time, once the effects subsided, he found himself capable of having an honest conversation with Helen regarding his true emotions. He admitted that he did bear some responsibility for the incident that affected his crew.

Additionally, Helen expressed her regret for not grasping his emotional condition more thoroughly, as well as for using the term “blessing” regarding his illness, considering the internal struggles he had been dealing with.

James subsequently concurred that, in certain aspects, he found himself fortunate to be back home – a longing shared by numerous others. After all, he was still breathing, and he had been reconnected with his spouse and child.

“But there’s a bit more to it than that, isn’t there?” added Helen.

“I suppose there is,” he agreed.

It seems like James is finding it tough to let go of his guilt right away, but that particular instance felt like a significant step forward for him.

The vet’s life will never be the same following the ordeal he went through, yet by expressing his turmoil, he’s now on a path toward healing. As we approach the Christmas installment of this series, we move forward into Season 6 with hope for continued recovery.
